What happened to Ford of Europe?
Mismanagement combined with a dwindling demand for cars.

It’s a profit play, not a volume one.
Ford and Chevrolet have huge margins on their pickups while also dominating the Tundra in sales volume. Some analysts calculated an average of $17,000 profit on every full sized GM pickup sold. Even Chrysler is beating Toyota in full sized trucks.

Ford and GM run multiple plants at full capacity to crank out full sized trucks, and they sell them all, quickly.
Tundra is an also-ran. It will stay that way until Toyota invests in the model while everyone else improves, upgrades, and updates every 5-6 years.

I don't think that's the point
His point was that Porsche's most profitable vehicle is an SUV. It being an SUV isn't the sole reason. If Porsche made an equally affordable sedan, they would sell a lot of those too.
ETA: It's no coincidence that the Macan, which happens to be their cheapest vehicle, is their best seller each year.

Yeah. Pickups are the bell cow. Sadans are in place to meet overall fuel efficiency requirements. I still can't believe people will drop 50-60k on a truck.

I feel like people that make this kind of statement haven't driven a truck built this decade.

I drive a new one monthly as a rental for work. All makes. They are nice. A hybrid from what I think of a truck, tho. And a bit much if you spend your time in an urban environment.

Of course not, but the analysis is pretty straightforward - Porsche didn't just decide make an SUV and people bought it. People were clamoring for SUVs from everyone and Porsche decided to play - and play smartly, at more of the middle of the market.

I just don't believe this is true. Even "affordable" sedans are losing to competing crossovers and coupes in their segments. I get what you're saying that being an SUV isn't some trump card, but frankly all other things being equal, the SUV will win every sales competition right now.

They are volume and margin leaders, but their sales collapse when gas prices climb or when there is any economic downturn.
GM, Toyota, and VW sedans are usually sold in hundreds of markets with only minor changes from country to country. It should be relatively easy to keep at least a few Ford sedans on the market.

Camry is the new Crown Vic. I think rental companies and taxi companies buy more than anyone else.
Private buyers are drifting towards crossovers.

Chrysler should be the one to give up making sedans.

The Chrysler 300 is actually a good car. I think that's the only one they make now.

You don't have to pay that much, but you do have to have done research and decided on a price before setting foot in the dealership.
Biggest mistake people make.

How could it not be? Look at the entry level offerings from all the luxury makes.

The cheap 2 wheel drive, V6 work truck is more than adequate for most pickup buyers.

I drove an Impala SS one time. Loved that thing. Super quick with good torque

If I were to go back to a sedan, I'd get another Toyota Avalon. Loved it but went to a truck instead.

Anyone who would choose a cheap arse Chevy Malibu over an Accord, Camry, Mazda6 or even Hyundai Sonata, Kia Stinger, Optima is a complete mental midget. Cadillac makes good looking cars but still lacking & overpriced compared to competition.

FIFY
A Macan would outsell your fictional affordable sedan easily given current market conditions. I would wager that even a slightly cheaper sedan would be outsold by the Macan. It is certainly what we see with other marques.
