DJ Arrested for 25-Year-Old Cold Case Killing of Teacher: Cops

Police in Lancaster, Pennsylvania say they arrested a popular wedding DJ in connection with a cold case killing from 1992. 25-year-old Christy Mirack was found sexually assaulted, beaten and strangled in her home. Authorities say DNA evidence found at the scene recently matched a sample in a public genealogy database that led them to 49-year-old Raymond Rowe, a popular wedding disc jockey known as DJ Freez. Man Arrested in 1992 Murder of Teacher After DNA Website Links Him to Killing

Police have arrested a popular Pennsylvania DJ in the cold case killing of a young woman who was sexually assaulted and murdered in her home back in 1992.

Christy Mirack was just 25 years old when she was beaten, strangled and sexually assaulted in her Greenfield Estate townhouse in East Lampeter Township on Dec. 21, 1992.

The sixth grade teacher was found on her living room floor by her school’s principal after she did not come to work the following day.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but Mirack had already died, authorities said.

Since the killing, investigators vetted dozens of persons of interest, but the case went cold.

But 25 years later, a break in the case came as a genotype formed from DNA evidence left at the scene matched relatives of Raymond Rowe, 49, a well-known area disc jockey.

Rowe’s relatives had uploaded their genetic material to a public database, authorities said.

The match that came back showed Rowe was a strong viable suspect, WPMT-TV reported.

On May 31, undercover detectives were able to pick up a water bottle and gum Rowe discarded while working as a DJ at an event at Smoketown Elementary School, the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office said.

Rowe’s DNA came back as a match to the DNA found on multiple parts of Mirack, and on the carpet underneath her body, the district attorney’s office said.

Rowe was arrested at his home and is being held at the Lancaster County Prison.

this was my first thought. And wonder how many murderers are walking free among us daily? How do you finally get to the point where you can actually sleep without worrying about the cops busting down your door?

Just the fact that this information could randomly come to light 25 years later and then there's a system in place to set off an alert somewhere that this DNA matched with what the police found on the scene and makes me actually feel good about the world.

Its the same way the recently caught GSK, one of the most prolific and notorious serial killers/rapists of all time.

It really makes me wonder if we will eventually have a SpCrt ruling on using genealogy websites in investigations, I assume without warrants.

which part in this case requires a warrant? The initial match was to family members. From that point on, it was just like any other investigation

How is something like Ancestry.com a public database?
I understand that in the contract you give your rights to the website, but how is the website's DNA database a public record? They are a private company?

And this is now the third cold-case murder I have read being solved exactly like this.

It's possible the Zodiac killer could be confirmed soon. If they can extract enough dna from envelopes and stamps it could point to his identity.

Aurthur Lee Allen had other people lick his stamps, but the police know who they are so if their dna shows up we know it's him.

Police should be grabbing a bunch of folks from cold cases using this method. They have a window of opportunity before some liberal judge says this is not legal. Have a feeling this method will eventually get caught up in court.

DNA driven likenesses were pretty damn solid, taking into account changing hair style and the fact they have no eye witnesses:

Other than the forehead, ears, eyes, jaw, and chin being totally different it’s an exact match

Haha, I was look at a pic of him younger. I tried to get a different one, hold on.

This was built from DNA only. That is pretty fricking crazy to me:
