The people being apprehended aren’t submitting their DNA. The police are deducing the DNA matches by using other people’s DNA.
right, they only used that data to determine he was a suspect. Just like any other steps taken during an investigation.
From that point they used the regular process of getting his DNA and confirming.

Military has it anyways, though they claim they won't use it for criminal investigations.

As of about 10 years ago, the military has steadily refused to give DNA records to any LEO's in investigations. There have been cases where certain killing techniques were learned in specific training in the military so they knew what branch the killer was in. The military was not willing to help.

That's cool but I wouldn't bet money that it will stay that way for the rest of my life. That's all I'm saying.

Ummm... i dont know about you, but im not going around raping and killing teachers to where my DNA would show up on some cold case.
It just seems to be a slippery slope. Heading to a pre-Minority Report society.

“This family’s DNA contains the violent rebel genome of the North Carolina delegate for the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Because of their anarchist past, consider them armed and dangerous as you collect the family.”

It really makes me wonder if we will eventually have a SpCrt ruling on using genealogy websites in investigations, I assume without warrants.

That’s not what I understood.

From a private company’s dna report you used to ascertain your 2% sub-Saharan ancestry.

The question is, in the two recent cases did the investigators get a warrant to surreptitiously obtain the suspects' DNA (and should they need a warrant)?

I think the SC has ruled on that before. And yes it's legal
