Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome on Wednesday hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Gardere Lane Pedestrian Improvements project which will give residents in the community a safer path to traverse up and down the busy thoroughfare. The $663,891 project involves the installation of approximately 6,000 feet of 5-foot wide sidewalks along the east side of Gardere Lane from Nicholson Highway to Burbank Drive.

Currently, people in the community are forced to walk along the narrow shoulder of the two-lane street to reach neighborhood stores and bus stops, or else plod through ditches littered with trash and debris.

This is something I will compliment the city for. I have seen kids and moms pushing strollers inches from traffic on uneven grass when i used to drive this way 15 years ago. Why Kip never pushed this through is beyond me.

FINALLY

The City of Baton Rouge doing something pragmatic that will benefit citizens is amazing to me.

Four years ago this month the CP Council voted to do the sidewalk. Yes, it was needed; but four years to start?

Come. On man

Gardere has been a popular family middle name for us since the early 1800s

Side walks will give drive-by shooters a better shooting angle.

Now just give them street lights and it’ll be the safest place in town.

$600k should be a rounding error for a city the size of BR. That's hilarious that we are holding ceremonies over a project that size

Doing some quick research by looking at quotes from contractors, it seems like $5 to $10 per square foot is the rate, depending on the quality of materials. And that includes all materials such as concrete, rebar, wood, etc. and labor.

That sidewalk is 30,000 square feet (6,000 feet long by 5 feet wide).

Even using the high number of $10 per square foot, that’s still only $300,000.

Why will this project cost more than double at $663,891?

Well now they can walk in the road and ignore the perfectly good sidewalk next to them.

It seemed like the ones on Parker took all of a year to build out....but I think there weren't open ditches on that stretch. There was also more pedestrian infrastructure already existing tied in.

My first place in BR was an apartment in a 4-plex on scenic Gardere Lane. It really wasn't too bad back then. I never had any troubles, and the Piggly Wiggly on Burbank was convenient.

Good old Parker.

I use to ride my bike South down Parker to.get to school at Walnut Hills. There was a foot bridge off Parker that crossed Dawson Creek and into the back of school. Nice neighborhood back in the day.

How sad is it that they had a groundbreaking ceremony for a sidewalk?
