Galveston is more affected by the Mississippi River than the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Not to say it doesn't affect it, two major contributors to the MS gulf coast sediment load are the Pearl and Pascagoula.

Galveston beaches are flat out gross. Sorry....

As a Texan, I concur.

Excellent responses so far. Yall are contributing great content to the conversation

Tell me you know nothing about the Mississippi River without telling me you know nothing about the Mississippi River.

The Galveston water would be a lot better if they got rid of the jetties on the island. The water has no chance to flow through the area and gets caught and swirls around all the silt. Go a half a mile out on a boat and the water is great.

incidentally, Galveston beaches are much darker than Mississippi beaches in other regards as well.

This is like comparing cancer to AIDS

Mississippi beaches are cancer and Galveston is AIDS

Which would you rather have? Obviously cancer because at least cancer isn’t gay.

But you really don’t want either.

Padre is just so damn far. If you’re gonna drive that far you might as well go a little further to the AL beaches

Houston to Padre is a much easier drive than Houston to AL. But nobody in Louisiana should go to Padre bc AL/FL are nicer.

The surf fishing in Galveston, especially in the Jamaica Beach area is great. We always get some nice reds, some huge specks and a few flounder.

If you strike out, stop at the fish markets in Kemah and stock up.

The barrier islands affect the beaches in Biloxi.

This. I mean Deer Island ruins a lot of Biloxi with it being so close but if you go on the back side of Horn or Ship island the water and sand is better than a lot of the Alabama and Florida beaches. Even Cat island which is far closer to the MS and Pearl River has good beaches.

Nothing personal, but the first time I saw the beach at Biloxi I thought that it was a lake and not the ocean. Definitely the saddest and most white trashy looking ocean view out there.

That silt flow is also expanding the barrier islands here so it adds up over time.

I read somewhere that Padre Island is the longest barrier island in the world.

I used to go to different stretches of MS beaches to metal detect early on Monday mornings. It wasn’t unusual to see dump trucks loaded with nice sand dumping it on the beach. This was approximately 30 years ago.

Growing up there we'd get the spiel that the barrier islands trap the silt but the tradeoff is hurricane protection. Between Camille and Katrina frick it.

Florida is nice for a visit and all but man there’s just so many things working against it. The prices are jacked up, it’s crowded and weirdos are attracted. Some of the weirdest people on earth reside in FL

Agree.

Have an 18 month old. Going to Florida or Orange Beach/Gulf Shores usually ends up costing like 3k, then its an absolute haul to load up shite, take to beach, go back up for a nap, repeat.

Until kids get to like middle school aged, it just isn't worth the hassle IMO. Mississippi beaches have nice Sand, I don't have to worry about young kids going in the water, much less expensive, and much less crowded.

That being said I'm sure I'll still get swindled into going to Orange Beach or Pensacola sometime this summer

Thats because the water on the beach is very lake like

Minimal waves and super shallow. Have to go out to the Barrier Islands to see the real Gulf
