I hooked up our washing machine today to the generator, and it would not power on, no lights, nothing.
We got our power back on a little while ago, and the washing machine is working fine now.

Well forget washers..... But most problems are due to people hooking up major appliances to cheap arse 100 ft cords. Always go big and short with extension cords.

A lot of y’all must own laundromats because we’ve got way too many people trying to hook washers and dryers up to generators. The laundry can go a few days. It’ll be okay.

It is mind boggling the amount of people that do not have their house set up to run a generator and use extension cords running through their home.

Yep, my fancy piece of shite Samsung dryer is natural gas but it won't work with my generator. I have full intentions to invest in a decent inverter type soon.

You mean I can’t daisy chain three 16-gauge orange cords across the house to power these two 20-amp appliances?

That too, but for these newer pieces of shite like the Samsung I have, all it needs power is fit the blower and tumbler. Mine's gas but the fancy control panel that plays me a little jingle won't work on dirty power. It's like a damn computer.

On a side note, bring back pilot lights on gas ranges. It's bullshite needing electricity to run a gas oven. And pilot lights on gas water heaters.

My gas water heater is less than two years old and it runs fine with the power off.

If you are sitting around doing nothing, the wash can wait a few days. But when you’re sweating your arse off outside removing fallen trees & cleaning storm debris & helping your neighbors do the same, the laundry raises in importance. Probably would have been better off burning those clothes

after the 2016 flood we just threw clothes away and went bought a stack of t-shirts and shorts from academy. It was easier than finding a place to wash when no one had power.

More likely the appliance doesn't like the floating neutral on your generator

Ground neutral bonding plug for generators with floating neutrals. This will solve a missing ground/neutral problem

Our portable gen is set to plug into the pool house and we use extension cords to run fridge/freezer in the house.

All and I mean ALL laundry is done before a hurricane — it’s part of prep lol.

How am I supposed to use a gen to my house without extension cords?

We had to string some fishing line from fence to fence and hand wash our clothes a few days ago and hang them dry. Wasn't terrible to be honest.

All day Sunday, we washed and dried our clothes, the kids clothes, and the towels. Last load in the dryer finished about two hours before we lost power. Bought us quite a few days of not having to deal with laundry.
