They mean use adequately sized extension cords of the minimum length needed, not a 100ft 16 gauge cord as someone gave as an example. For my portable generator I use two 80ft 10 gauge cords to get the power in the house, and then split off to 10-15 ft 12 gauge cords fanned out to appliances. Running two cords in from the generator reduces the current flowing in each cord further minimizing voltage drop. Two smaller cords are usually cheaper, and easier to handle than one big cord.

I have one of the 30 amp cords that has 4 outlets on it, thats my transmission line. Fridge is plugged in to it, then a heavy 20' cord to the deep freeze off of another outlet. Then two longer extension cords to run lights and a room ac off of. I will add a transfer switch and socket to my house soon.
