Agreed - but that’s on us as parents.

I really wish they would just put a price on playing the sport…instead of having my son submit emails of people to hit up for money. It’s a private school and this isn’t for playoffs or summer tournaments…the regular school sport.

My kids go to a private school. One pays about $600 to play football. The other pays about $800 to play Soccer. Both still have fund raisers. You have to pay for the scholarships for "ringers" somehow, I guess.

I thought that equity in the team would come from practicing, lifting weights, and building relationships with teammates.

I can tell you that being forced to sell liberty cards for my football team did not make me or my family buy-in more.

At least it is your kid asking for the money instead of mom and dad posting a calendar on Facebook and asking you to donate the amount of money for what day of the month you pick.

BS, if you want to do something like that, require them as a team to do community service.

If it's money for athletic equipment and operations, then just take their check. Or have them sell candy or coupon books.

If you're looking for a mailing/email/telephone list to solicit money on an ongoing basis, don't make kids get it for you, do it yourself.

quote:

So many these days are spoiled rotten because mommy and daddy will write the thousand dollar check for the latest gear, travel team, recruiting service, etc.

It’s a shame that rather than have their kid do some work to support the team, the parents just bitch at the coach and write another check.

The reason parents don't want to do this is because they don't want to be responsible when the school starts flooding family members with requests for money.

We found in our scouting groups that parents would rather just pay the actual cost than deal with selling shiat. And as a person that had to administrate the selling of shiat... I welcome it.

If people can't afford it, they can sell shiat.
If they'd rather pay full price, we take all forms of payment.

It's so misleading to tell people it only costs "$xxx dollars," but constantly hit them up for more as time passes.

Yea, there should be $X cost…and ability to ‘sponsor’ another student or two if you wish…or a % of a student’s cost.

I mean…… you could just ask the coach “hey coach, can I give you $500 to leave me tf alone this season?”

This is the right question to ask.

the last year I had a kid playing sports, well maybe the last couple of years , a few of my buddies and I were so sick of this that we each would give equal amounts of money to each other's kids teams in our names to make it look like the donations were solicited

My daughter does PUBLIC high school cheer. We just got the final fee bills for the upcoming year.

Returning cheerleaders pay $1,800 over five months (May - Sept). New cheerleaders pay close to $2,800 over same five months (difference in cost is uniforms... if a returning cheerleader has to buy additional uniform pieces, they pay additional on top of the $1,800).

Then, Oct - Dec we pay for nationals if we make it (we will make it... everyone makes it lol). They told us to budget $1,000 per cheerleader and $700 per chaperone (each cheerleader must bring a chaperone). Cost will be finalized later in the year.

We do a number of fundraisers. Any fundrasier you do, the cheerleader gets credited for the amount the school gets. So if you sell ads, car wash tickets, candy, whatever, the profit goes directly to that cheerleader's account. Team fundraisers such as the summer camp and fall cheer clinic they put on for young kids, the profit is split among all the cheerleaders who work those events.

Basically for each payment that is due, you can use whatever how much money is in the account that hasn't been used yet, to go towards that payment.

This seems like a decent system for us.

Why not buy your son's 20 units? He won't have to do anything and you'll be paying extra personally as suggested in your OP.

I imagine there's a professional/dedicated cheer coach instead of a teacher who coaches part-time? Good bit of that $ probably goes to her.

Varsity Sports is owned by Bain Capital...

Three sets of uniforms (two traditional cheer uniforms, in different colors..., plus a pep rally / basketball cheer uniforms) including all the necessary undergarments

Cheer shoes - one set for practice and one set for games/competition

Warmup jacket / pants

Two sets of poms (they actually also use a pink set of poms during October but the team owns those)

Backpack
