Cliff Notes:

Acadiana High, in Lafayette Parish, enforcing the new dress code mandates of hoodies/jackets with hoods not being allowed on campuses during school hours, has a student in the hospital after being tased by an SRO who had to chase the student down after refusing to remove the hoodie.

Cliff notes:
---The dress code is stupid but it's still a known code. Abide by it or face the disciplinary consequences.
---SROs, by law, are NOT to be utilized to enforce dress code as it's not a "legal" situation.
---This student actively chose to wear the hoodie, refused to comply with multiple teachers (plural not possessive) attempting to enforce, the SRO tried to verbally intervene, the student then ran away thru the hallways causing disturbances, the SRO pursued the student & the student punched the SRO in the face.
---The SRO tased the student.

Edit with Update from Scott PD:

quote:

On August 20, 2021 at 0704 hours, Officers were contacted by an Assistant Principal that a student was not following commands, was disturbing the peace, and refused to stop or comply. Officers were able to escort the suspect John Andrus, 19 years of age, to the front office when he attempted to walk away but was stopped by officers. Andrus then attempted to walk away again in the opposite direction. Officer grabbed Andrus by his hand and attempted to stop him when the he pulled away and began resisting. Andrus stayed tense, constantly trying to get away from officers. Officers were able to put a single hand cuff on the right hand of Andrus, but could not get it onto his opposing hand. At this time Andrus was placed against a glass window inside of the school hallway and continued to resist therefore cracking the glass. Andrus was then able to pull away at which time he and an officer fell to the ground. Andrus arose from his feet and using his right hand, that still had a hand cuff attached, swung a punch at the officer then ran down the hall way where he ultimately slowed down and was met at Taser point. Mr. Andrus was told multiple times to get on the ground or he would be Tazed. Mr. Andrus had the handcuff still attached to his right wrist and he continued to move around while he tried to rip the handcuff away from his wrist. He continued to not comply at which time he was Tazed. Mr. Andrus fell to the ground at which time he was placed in handcuffs and complied the remainder of the time. Mr. Andrus was escorted to the School Resource Officer Office and was checked out by Acadian Ambulance Services.

Mr. Andrus was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on the listed charges.
Disturbing the Peace, Aggravated assault on a police officer, Resisting an Officer by force and Criminal damage to Property.

During this entire incident, no students nor staff were injured during the process.

lol no he isnt. the SRO used the tazer because of the assault on an officer....not because he was wearing a hoodie.

Don’t feel bad at all.

If i had punched an officer when i was in highschool, I’m not even sure what to put in words would have happened.

Tbh, the officer should have landed a few punches also. The student needs to understand that punching an officer is and will never be ok and that has very serious consequences

The SRO didnt intervene for dress code purposes. He intervened due to the disturbance.

Hi there, you must be new to America. Here's some important information to learn:

Facts don't stop lawsuits and they don't stop administrators from settling when the money doesn't come out of their own pockets.

Welcome to the best country on earth!
