If I'm making a joke involving salary, I just randomly choose an amount between 35k and 70k. I don't tell anyone, outside of my family, what my actual salary is.

When your wife can stay at home and get fat on bon bons, pop lortabs and watch Netflix, everyone knows you are a baller. There is no need to tell.

People will either pity you or be jealous of you after you tell them. No upside.

When telling a potential employer I always crank it up to max possible but I don't lie. I make it clear that they need to offer more.

Telling CFP or CPA I use tax return number.

Well, maybe you'd make more if you didn't suck at English

I've discussed my salary in investment discussions with friends. For example, the amount we could realistically afford to direct from our salary each month, yearly or worst case scenario to a certain opportunity. That's about the only time.

Only place I've ever discussed salary is on the Money Board and it's always a rough/round Household figure as I'd never want to look like I'm bragging about what I personally make. And because when discussing finances and what one can expect to afford, it tends to be tied to household income.

In terms of what you should include when thing of that number, I used to just say whatever my W2 said from the previous year. But that was when I was always making more than the last year. 2016 was the first year I really made significantly less. So now so just say my base salary. Bonuses and stock are lagniappe.

Can't include 401k and health insurance type stuff. My company has a place where they display "total compensation" and if I could include that, If actually be an OT baller instead of pretending.

I don't discuss salary with anyone outside of my wife and Bert. And, I have no reason to lie to them.

Never tell women your salary even if you make a lot of money.

Not really appropriate to discuss on the civilian side.

When I was military everyone knows what each other makes (slight differences based on housing allowances and special pays).

Those other things are not salary but they are obviously measurable benefits.

When comparing a new job offer versus staying put in your current one, bonus, pension, 401K employer match, stock options, and other perks can make a huge difference in disposable income.

You've been brainwashed.

Who does it help to keep your salary secret? You? Or your corporate overlords?

It is uncanny how someone can be so often so wrong.

My CPA is a smoking woman.

I don't mix business with pleasure but she knows (better than me) what I made last year.

Mrs. Füt electronically "signs" our returns, she has no idea what our household income was.

Truth be told, I couldn't tell you either, only what the first number was.
