I don't why people are so secretive about their income. I'll tell close friends and family if I think they would like to know (or ask in a roundabout way).

What good could possibly come out of it?

I'm self employeed so my salary sounds pretty badass to folks who are employed privately or by the government, but it really sucks when you consider taxation, student loans, self insurance, retirement planning, etc.

Discussing salaries can do absolutely no good in a work environment

what bad could come out of it?

i don't think it's that big of a deal. it might be different if I was making a lot.

It's just not appropriate to talk about.

Telling someone how much you make is in poor form, and should be avoided at all costs...including if they ask.

To mention it in the absence of a direct query positively reeks of insecurity.

Just so you know what everyone who has any inkling of class is thinking to themselves when you do this....

Well no shite. You fricked a fricking stripper and all you got out of it was a several hundred million dollars right before Enron collapsed, a new, younger wife, and no jail time.

frick you, buddy.

No offense, but you must not have much real world working experience. It's not often everyone in a company is paid the exact same for their performance

If you happen to tell someone how much you make (as in for real, not your OT salary), do you include how much your company pays towards your health benefits (or other benefits like 401k match)?

Meh I'll talk about salary to close friends when we are trying to figure out if we are being paid fair value and such. I wouldn't blurt it out to strangers, but it's not something taboo to me around people I trust.

I knew a guy that would tell people how much he made per hour.

Problem is he worked about 50 hours a week, and he used the overtime hourly rate. "Yeah man I make thirty bucks an hour", when in reality it was twenty, thirty was ot pay, but he made it seem like was base thirty

Dude can I get an interest free loan for my free-range granola tech start-up? Before you decide, let me preface by saying my insatiable envy will not allow me to apprrciate the gesture regardless of what decision you come to.

Oh my bad, I thought we were talking about people you work with. I still don't talk about my income with friends, it's just one of those things you don't talk about. My close friends and I have no issue saying when one isn't doing too hot but it's like an engagement ring, you don't ask
