re: "Fudging" salary when telling someone

No one in my circle knows what our household brings in each month outside of me and my wife other than my dad.
Everyone else thinks it's a lot, but if they really knew, they'd be in shock. We live well beneath our means.

I don't even tell my wife what my full salary is with bonuses let alone other idiots.

Your salary is no ones business but if you aren't pulling six figs you need to go to the OB.

Keeping salaries a secret is how we(management) prevent people getting pissed off about being paid less than their co-workers.
Now as for prospective employees. We(hiring managers) want to know if we can get you on the cheap or not. So we ask. We will also lie to you about whether or not we can pay more or not.
So yes. Freaking lie dude. Tell them what you want to make to leave.

Why would anyone do this?

My close friend colleagues and I share because it helps them/me gain leverage when negotiating for ourselves.
We're all around the same level at a major corporation.
But that's it.
Trashy to just tell people that stuff for no reason.
ETA:
Not sharing that with each other is how our corporate overlords keep power over us. It's brainwashing. Even our HR people perpetuate this shite by not explaining what range of pay each level of employee can make. They refuse to give us any leverage.

The fact that someone is a W-2 already tells me they don't make thst much.
In addition a lot of big companies have taken on the role of basically providing welfare. They hire x people at a set price per head for some sort of state tax credit. In other words, big company A already knows what big company B pays people to nine-key and play on tigerdroppings.

I've only told 1 person outside of my mom and girlfriend how much I make, and that's because he's a real estate agent and it would assist him in finding me a place.

I find it funny that typically the only people that discuss salary are guys making an hourly wage. It's cute.

Some family and friends have all asked. One friend in particular always asks and it's totally as a measuring stick.
If I can tell you're just trying to see how we stack up, I'm giving you a BS number or not telling you.
Another friend and I discuss financials often and it's not a contest at all. He has a decent idea.
I tell the exact number on here, base salary. I don't know any of you and don't care if you know.

As an employee of a government entity, my salary is public information so I can't really keep it a secret.

What good could possibly come out of it?
I'm in sales and my co workers and I always share deals and the commission associated with them. It helps everyone learn how to make more money for themselves and the company. I've never seen anything bad come of it. When someone leaves for another company they usually share their compensation for the new position. It helps in understanding your value in the market. If you don't know your market value then people can take advantage of you.

It definitely helps keep certain employees' salaries down. It also allows them to pay certain idiots way more than they deserve without pissing off more qualified employees.

I'd have to ask my wife how much money I make. She handles our personal finances

One of the good thing I love about America. You can tell people to stay out of my business.
In India, the first thing they ask you is how much you make and they start to give you advice.
Then they will tell you their son who is in Texas is making 100 million a year. Why is your son not making 100 million?

I could fudge my salary by 30k and my friends and family would still be shocked. I make decent money (CPA), but I wish I was making half as much they think I do.
