Trudat. That place was awesome. Used to go every Saturday for computer parts and builds.
Never seemed sustainable though.

Who the hell came up with that term? The kid in Office Depot used that term the other day and I thought he was fricking with me. Dongle? Seriously?

I remember them for being the main sponsors if not the owners of the Arena Football champion San Jose Sabercats...

I figured Fry's had gone out of business a decade ago. Actually impressed they held on this long.

Nearest one to Louisiana was likely in Houston or Atlanta. Was a great store to go to back around 2005 but hadn’t been to one since because I hadn’t had the opportunity.
Unfortunately, big box specialty stores have had trouble for years, especially electronics where Computer City, CompUSA, and Circuit City have all gone bust.

Is this really a breaking scoop if their stores have had literally no product on the shelves the last few weeks?
Yes. Fry's shelves have been notoriously empty for years. They just kept the stores going virtually empty. No sarcasm.

pretty much what the shelves have looked like in Atlanta for well over a year now.

Maybe they shouldn’t have spent so much money on storefronts

Sad end to a once very fun store.

Best Buys turnaround has been impressive.

Me either, but the pics look cool. Looks like a Radio Shack on steroids.

I think BB managed it in part by heavily dumping their stock of software / movies and moving towards being a showroom for major appliances.
Like Sears if they weren’t paying insane retirement costs.

It has...and unexpected at least on my part. I'm not sure how BB continues to get customers in the store. I realize they've changed their store layouts and added some high end audio/video stuff in the stores, but that alone doesn't seem like enough. Price matching Amazon is huge for them though....I don't see why everyone didn't/doesn't do that if you can do it and still be successful like BB has.
On Fry's....the only time I went to one was in Gwinnett Co GA when I was working there for about 4-6 weeks. At that time back around 2007-2008 it was a pretty awesome place. They had everything and anything you needed to do awesome electronics stuff and you could go into a store and get the stuff. I hadn't seen anything like that since Radio Shack in the mid to late 90s. I was a tech junky and I loved it then. I found myself wishing they had one in BR or NOLA. It is sad to see them fall on hard times in the last 10 years or so....and ultimately succumb to the struggles.

Yeah and I've found that their prices are already close to Amazon, regardless of the price match.
BB also has a good 1 hour pick up system.

Has anyone mentioned the similar life and death of an earlier generation's New Generation?
Some New Generation ads for you kids.

Exactly what they were....mixed with Best Buy. It was the go-to place after Radio Shack went under. The DFW area stores were once very busy. Also, they were the size of a Target store.

Basically what they were. The ones in Atlanta were staffed by friendly, competent people. You could build a radio, computer, whatever, and they had an excellent home theater and CD department. Much preferred them to Best Buy.
