Throwing money at it won't help. Another thing that's rarely mentioned is that most of middle and upper class kids in our state's 2 or 3 largest cities left the public school system decades ago.

Yeah, it's insane. It wasn't that big of a deal in NW La when I lived there like it is South La though.

You can still find good schools in the burbs but not in the city outside of the magnet programs.

Imagine the amount of money that could have been/could be saved by middle class families in EBR if EBRP Public schools weren’t complete dysfunctional nightmares.

I don't have to imagine. I'm one of them.
ETA - we probably aren't considered middle class in this area but I definitely don't consider us wealthy

Baton Rouge wouldn’t be Baton Rouge today without those refineries. Sure they could have been built elsewhere but at the time, they were built in the best place possible.

Because LA only considers 3 miles as state taxable for employees and past 6 miles isn’t federal

So what about 3-6 ? Do a google search on the number of wells which fall in this small window, Texas (and BP) companies have been raping Louisiana for years.
Try to get oil off the Texas coast and see what it costs BAW

I’m not so sure. I imagine BR could be something like Charleston,nc or savannah , Georgia.
We still have a SEC university plus a state capital. Property values around now Exxon would probably be something like the garden district if not matter. Along the river there would probably be an extend river walk and probably some commercial / corporate businesses like in Lakeview, New Orleans.
We might have a charming southern town if Exxon had not developed the way it did.

Yeah that’s the idea. If you take away LSU football, Baton Rouge kinda sucks compared to other southern cites like charleston, savannah, St. Louis , even Lafayette

It's not like that refinery was built in the 50's or even 40's....it was built in 1909. Any modern parallels are moot.

Baton Rouge would 100% be much smaller. It would most likely be much nicer, but it would definitely be much smaller.

Not Starkville but would likely resemble Natchez, Vicksburg, Greenville, Cape Girardeau, Davenport, or a hundred other riverbank towns up the MS.
