My dad was 49 when he was diagnosed with alzheimer's and dementia. He made it a little over 5 years before he lost the battle. Got to see my oldest daughter and joke with her some while he was still somewhat there. Really hurts that my now 2 year old some he only held maybe once, and my newborn son was going to be named after him we bury next week next to him.

Don't avoid spending time with him cause you think he won't remember or cause he's not who he once was. Anything these last 9 months have shown me is that you want any memory posso, good or bad.

Oweo, dude... just be less stupid man. Like I genuinely wish the best for you, but just stop sometimes. Just realize that its best to not type sometimes. Just ponder at whats around you and accept your life for what it is and scooter back like 6 feet. (Mask of course)

I just caught a vision of my dad having another kid in 2 years and raising him into adulthood. Your pop must have been patient. I would pity any child that sprung from my old man's loins today.

I watched my pawpaw ride that ship to the bottom. It sucks. He was also a hell of a man and a hell of a warrior.

You'll get good times mixed in with the bad, cherish those good ones for all they are worth.

I did some bitching today and I shouldn't have.

I don't understand how people like you do it. Prayers sent and God speed , you're a hell of a man.

My granddad (85), my dad (50) and I (20) were doing a road trip when we saw my granddad was starting to decline. It was night, I was driving with my granddad riding shotgun and my dad sleep in the back. My granddad very plainly looked at me, called me by my dad's name, and asked "who's the old a-hole in the backseat and why are we picking up hitchers"

Engage him in conversation about his life as a kid and as a young man, military activity etc. You will be amazed at how conversational he will be an don point. My 86 year old mother could recall names, addresses, younger family members, perform basic math and read the paper despite her Alzheimers. You just need to meet him where he is and know that you are providing a forum or him to do more than just lay there while others talk around him. Talk to him. You sound like a grand son he can be proud of.

Your Grandpa was the smartest man in the vehicle at that moment, after reading your posts here, we all figured your dad was an old a-hole.

Alzy sucks, from someone who watched a parent decline from it for over a decade.

My wife (no pics) and I uprooted our lives and careers to move closer to her parents and help her mother who’s battling alzheimer. It’s painful to see her slip deeper and deeper but being there to help FIL keeps him sane. It would be hard to do something like that alone. My prayers are sent to you.

I work with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients daily

One moment they will ask me where their Cadillac is and another moment they want to bite me or tell me to frick off

I don’t get how the brain atrophies and changes

It's almost as if they restricted access to nursing homes for some reason.

Excuse the pitiful effort for comfort, but try to appreciate that he can put words together that are at least comprehensible. My mom has dementia and she can talk for 20 minutes straight and not one thing will make sense. It's devastating. She just turned 69.

Your thread title is accurate ether way.
