My grandfather, hell of an American, served on the NOPD, fought in Vietnam, retired as a plant operator, saw me for the first time in a year and said “Its been a while. Haven’t seen you since we flew those fighter jets into the storm.”
While I wanted to chuckle, I couldn’t help but tear up at the state of his mental status. I wouldn’t wish this disease on my worst enemy

It’s a tough road ahead. My mom has dementia and it’s tough watching her lose her faculties day by day. God speed good man

Hang in there man. Lost my dad to Alzheimers when I was 23. He was 93 (yes biological father).
It is tough but play along with him. It will make him happier and less stressed out even if it's for a minute. He may not remember you but you damn sure will remember him and all of the good stuff even in the midst of the current storm. God Bless yall.

They live 4 hours away from where I am currently at, and for 7 of the last 12 months I lived 16 hours away

My Grandma looked at my mom one day & said “I know you, you’re that floozy that walks the streets”
It’s heartbreaking & soul crushing when someone you love so much doesn’t know who you are but take the time to sit & talk about whatever he wants to talk about whether he knows who you are or not
Cherish that time & while it hurts now hopefully there will be things that you can look back on & find humor

It’s a terrible disease. Sometimes it’s just best to humor them and agree with what they are saying. Sometimes all you can do is laugh but at least you are there for them whether they comprehend who you are or what’s really going on. Just listen and talk to them like normal, because that’s all you can do

My grandfather who stayed sharp until his last year or so, would famously shout every name of every friend he ever had if he was working on something and needed a hand.
He usually started and then worked his way to the right decade.
The further back he went with the names the more urgent the issue was.
Poor man was terrified of snakes, one fell in the boat and he called me n***** "fake name" a good 30x before he got it out to tell me to get out of the boat. That man was his best friend from 1928 on
It's shitty when it happens. But it's funny when it isn't painful.

Yes. My bro at 66 and me at 70.
Loved that son of a gun. Fantastic man. Raised 6 biological kids and 7 step children. 13 in total. Would give his life for each of them.

Really horrible disease. Watched my grandfather suffer through it. Hopefully your grandfather doesn’t have to suffer too much.
One if the worst feelings is watching them being a prisoner of their own mind and not being able to do anything about it.

Watched me grandmother go through it. It's gotta be the worst thing imaginable to watch someone suffer from.

When my grandmother died after a 16 year battle with Alzheimers, she weighed 56 pounds. I hate that stupid disease
