I grew up in upstate NY and have lived in the south for over two decades now. In my experience, northeastern people are far more racist than southerners and it's not close.

Apparently you’ve never been to Boston.

Also, racists are everywhere and every color.

In my experience, living and working with minorities tends to create racism.

You interact with enough people of a certain group and you get tired of certain traits that are overwhelmingly found in them.

Just ask any server how they respond to a 20 top table of black people. They fricking hate it because they will be run ragged doing shite for them to end up with no tip.

"The Southern Pig doesn't care how close you get as long as you don't get too high... the Northern Fox doesn't care how high you get as long as you don't get too close"

-Malcolm X

Vast majority of white people up north live in communities that are 90% plus white

I grew up in Georgia in a 50/50 town of black and white. Now I’m in Michigan in a suburb with a 90% white population.

I really can’t say where I encounter more racism but it’s still weird going out to eat or something and not seeing a single minority. It’s crazy segregated here

That's why I normally avoid this discussion. I haven't really experienced enough instances of overt racism in any part of this country to form meaningful sample sizes. Not disagreeing with those who have though.

I usually tell people from up North "Don't talk to me about race relations until you have some."

Prepare for a wall of text...

I grew up in Wisconsin and transferred to State after 2 years at Minnesota. My mother grew up on a farm and (in hindsight) was quite ignorant. Started out with 'why State instead of Ole [P]iss'. Then voicing concern about racial issues... which if she knew the true history she'd be happy with my choice. (Frankly without my time in Minneapolis it would have been a lot bigger racial shock.) I laugh about having the History Channel as background noise while packing...2 hours about the Klan. My first face-to-face was with (what I found out later) was the daughter of a Bama klansman. That was as close as I got to the northern stereotype of southern racial issues. I had a brake job done in Columbus 3 weeks later and was present for the owner chewing out the mechanic for not noticing it was a "yankee car" when they had issues changing them due to rust.

The first suitemate I met was a guy who robbed me of a short fat Albert. 4 years later he was one of my groomsmen. The second was a farm baw from Florence who I met while making fun of the accent a NY boy had on blast. He ended up being my best man. We had 7 in the suite segregated by 4 on the other side and 3 on my side of it. I don't think I ever locked my door past the first couple of weeks. It was by far the most educational 2 years of my life.

Truths learned... The north is more racist because the racism isn't in the open. Especially the cities. You see segregation in places Chiraq where the Southside was turned into a gangland so the projects could be gentrified. It's OK to have your beliefs nuanced through experiences and observations of others. (The "black man" vs N word and what is the difference.) Treat others how you want to be treated and 90% of the time it'll be reciprocated plus some.

I then did an Indiana-Florida-Midwest tour since then and thought Indiana people are fairly close with racially to TE south but they are rude AF by comparison. In Florida I-4 was the split from Southern north of it to a bunch of New York and Caribbean people who wouldn't know southern hospitality if it hit them in the face. It was hell having people acting like the stereotypical redneck on the road and then having to deal with the New York Puerto Ricans at work going in the opposite direction. Where were at now is bearable if you ignore the rude, clueless foreign tech students.

Late buddy of mine, a Yankee, explained it this way.

We in the north do not hate blacks, but we hate them on an individual, one by one basis.

You in the South have disdain for blacks, but like individual blacks based on their being decent.

I agreed with him. They in the north think we are all inbred, uneducated, backward. They think all of LA is like south LA, water, swamp, alligators on the front porch, etc.

So far, of the Yankees I’ve met in my life, the dumbest, most hateful, most bigoted, and first to accuse others of being bigoted have all been from Ohio.

Because in the South you have to interact with blacks more.

If you go through a drive through in Tuscaloosa, it takes like a 30 minutes. In reality that's because those workers aren't motivated or educated well, but if you're used to decent service from workers who are mostly white in North, it's easy to instantly blame race.
