It's an office for a "consolidated" form of government where the top elected official in the executive branch is "mayor" of the parish seat and also "president" of the incorporated parts of the parish. Supposedly to make government more efficient with less waste. EL OH EL to that.
Sid Edwards is the Mayor-President of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish.

My favorite was the sidewalk rehabilitation.
Money well spent only to have to rip it out some day.
Same with the J-Turns in Broussard and St. Mary Parish.

what’s delaying converting Hwy 90 into I-49 from Broussard to I-310?
Patterson to Berwick and Des Allemands/Paradis to I-310 will take quite a bit of work.

When the City of Houma consolidated back in the 1980's. They just dropped the Mayor Title and went with just Parish President, even though the Parish President is conceivably the Mayor of Houma.
The one thing that irratates me about consolidation is if you have someone from outside the city limits that runs for Parish President or even for council seats. Those representatives dilute the representation of the urban services district, or in the case of Baton Rouge, it may be opposite where representatives from the city may out number the Parish as a whole leading to some areas being felt neglected like St. George.
Another example of consolidation is Orleans Parish and the City of New Orleans. They don't have a Parish President or Parish Council, everything is consolidated into a City Council and City Mayor.

I will be happy when they finished I-49 from Ft. Smith to Texarkana and then to Lafayette. It would then be a breeze to drive from NW Arkansas to Lafayette. But none of this most likely will be done in my lifetime.

This would make my life so much easier as well. But I don't think we will see it.

Not being mean, but explain to me why taxpayers across the country should pay billions for a 50 year old project in the 133th largest metro area in the country to improve a highway to save a few people maybe, hopefully 5-7 minutes going through the area. Its not like congestion is stifling the region, although I get the annoyance.
That gap is part of a highway system, one that should eventually link Kansas City and New Orleans. It’s totally a national issue.

Ah yes, the handicapped accesable sidewalk rehab. Only issue is all the driveways that cut thrugh the sidewalks make it impossible for a wheelchair to actually go down the sidewalks without hitting a tall curb at every driveway.
All we did was give the homeless a nicer corner to stand at while begging for money.

I-49 has a marketing problem, they should swap names with I-69.
People sit up, pay attention and are positively disposed towards attractive people saying “I-69”.
“I-49” just doesn’t make the needle (or the bean) move.

That and improving the light synchronization has made a big difference. It was tough to brake for the next light in mid air.
Also, safer footing for area residents to play Frogger in the middle of the night.

For clarity, I49 is completed from Ft Smith to Joplin at least, going north.
I'm not sure they've even began south of Ft Smith to connect with I49 south, in Texarkana. It is complete from Texarkana thru Shreveport to Lafayette. Just not south of there

LA DOTD finally made it to Houma with the sidewalk and curb refurbishment. They did a lot on Main Street when it repaved last year and Barrow street is going through a similar transformation. On Barrow they ripped out the brick curb in front of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, leveling out the sidewalks, and adding those tactile reminders that the side walk ends and the street is next. They are doing it as an overlay project on Barrow Street.
Tunnel Boulevard has a similar project, but they are doing a dreaded concrete patch project instead of an overlay. That will make it bumpier in the long run. It might be time to just lay 2-3 inches of asphalt on top and start milling it every 3-5 years.
This is probably the most construction I have seen in years from DOTD. I guess it pays to have two locals at the helm of DOTD in Glen Ledet and Archie Chaisson.
Now if they can ever get the extension of 3235 from Larose to US 90, we would be cooking. I would even be satisfied with a two lane bypass adding a shoulder and limiting development along the route so that a second set of lanes can be built and eventually turned into a Spur of I-49 with limited access.

You'd think with a Louisiana Speaker of the House we'd get more road projects.

Yes, I know. I live just South of the Missouri border close to I-49. The last I read was there was some construction of a new bridge across the Arkansas River.

Well, isn’t the city of New Orleans the whole of Orleans Parish? I don’t think there are any unincorporated areas of Orleans Parish, so it makes sense for that to be consolidated.
