Polk should never had a military base named after him in the first place.

I recently learned that Leesville was named after Lee. (Seems obvious now)

Yeah, exactly why we've the name USS Enterprise hasn't been maintained and sustained for far longer than you've been alive. One of our left leaning bros, Indefatigable, chose a handle after a ship in the Royal Navy that was active for nearly 200 years, going back into the 1700s, because tradition counts.

Was General Lee an honorable man? Did he know tactics? Let's measure on merit. He wasn't a racist like the Democrats/Klan. Lee was nearly never NOT a gentleman (I'm using consultant words, since I haven't read every word written about him.) So the problem is... ?

I know you don't care, but if you decided that the name of "San Diego" was cultural appropriation, what are they doing with MCRD San Diego? Parris Island?

Changing names does... what? If you can't explain what you're accomplishing through a move, you're not doing it for any good reason. This makes you bad person.

And Bragg being changed to Liberty? frick these DEI idiots

I attended a talk about the (I believe) eight forts being renamed, and that one stuck out. I asked the presenter why that one wasn't being renamed for someone. The guy said each base was presented with a short list of vetted names based on local connections and/or US military significance, and then the commander of each base took the list of names under consideration for recommending a new name. The people at Ft. Bragg, in a paraphrased way, said if we gotta pick a name then we pick none of these names. The commission said OK, but Bragg cannot stay so please recommend something else. The base commander, in consultation with the community at Fort Bragg, put Liberty forward.

This is how it was described to be by a member of the commission.

My son is there. We got our first letter and phone call from him this weekend. He’s doing good.

As for this name changing business. I think it’s stupid. But I’ll give them this much, Gen. Moore was a good choice.

I’ve heard Fort Bragg is going to be named Fort Liberty, or something generically similar. I can’t understand why’d they’d name the home of the Airborne something so generic when there are so many well deserving paratroopers to name it after. It makes no sense.

Read about Womack, the soldier who the hospital at Fort Bragg is named for.

So many Medal of Honor winners, and yet the commissary there was named after a congressman.

Should've named Bragg Ft Pineland.

I nominate Ft Chigger, Ft Tick, or Ft Poison Ivy.

I had a soldier in my platoon that everyone called Tick Dick because every time we went into the field he came back with his nether regions covered in seed ticks. He would practically soak his BDUs in that nasty permethrin spray (before you could get treated uniforms) and even tried wearing three dog flea and tick collars connected together over his belt, but nothing worked. To this day I have no idea what kind of hygiene issue he had going on down there that attracted ticks seemingly from all over North Carolina but he was always a miserably SOB before after and during an FTX.

Tab not scroll.

I thought I might expand on this for the people that have not been in the Army. When you graduate Ranger School you have the privilege of wearing a RANGER tab on your left shoulder. As I mentioned before this doesn't make you a "real" Ranger in the Army just Ranger qualified. There are quite a few Rangers in the Army for example if you go to Liberty nee' Bragg you will see a lot of 82nd soldiers with Ranger and Airborne tabs, especially the officers. They will often refer to each other as Airborne Rangers, but unless they served previously in the 75th they are technically Ranger Qualified but Airborne Ranger qualified doesn't fit well when calling cadence.

Where the "scroll" comes in is the unit patch of the 75th Ranger Regiment sometimes just called the Regiment. It looks like a scroll:

LINK

It is possible to be in the Regiment but not be Ranger Qualified but that is the exception rather than the rule.

The Regiment is the Armies only large unit with true high speed low drag personnel top to bottom. It is made up of 5 battalions 1 at Hunter Airfield, 1 at JB Mchord, and 3 at Benning. What many people don't know is there is a special company in the 75th that is under JSOC* known as the Regimental Reconnaissance Company AKA the Company. They are one of the two real Tier 1s in the Army. They have arguably the broadest skill set of any Tier 1 in the military. They used to be mainly recon and surveillance but since GWOT (global war on terror) they have been used more and more for direct action just like the 75th as a whole has.

*They are also technically part of the 75th Special Troops Battalion at Benning.

Short hand:

Tabbed ranger: a person that at least at one time was decently fit, knew their infantry battle drills, was better than average at land nav, was a decent swimmer, and above all could embrace the suck.

Regimental aka Scrolled Ranger: all of the above plus being a real badass that has seen some things because even in public record they have been in every major engagement in forever and a laundry list of major ops

Member of the Company: more skilz than a DEVGRU SEAL except they are apparently lacking the skill to write books

Good breakdown of the nuances. A little too humble on what it takes to earn the tab though. And I did not know the info on the RRC. You are good people Ot1.
