Sad to hear. He was great on tv news. Few like him today.

quote:Yep. There was a theme that made the rounds back when Gates was WAFB's investigative reporter that said, "You know you're going to have a bad day when you show up for work in the morning and Paul Gates is waiting for you in your office....."

Very sad. He was a great guy and a hell of a cook too.
When he helped John Folse those were great segments. I met him several times at various parties and functions and he was an extremely dry witted man. A real pleasure to talk to.
May God bless his soul.

Too young for that. He's apparently been gone for a few years. Very sad.
Donna Britt did a story that aired maybe 2 years ago where she went to Paul's house and interviewed him, just to see how he was doing. It wasn't good then...you could tell that he was mentally having a lot of issues and really couldn't do much for himself.
I watched a close relative die of cancer over the course of about a year and I thought that was the worst disease imaginable and the worst way to watch someone die. I think this Alzheimer's/dementia thing is worse though. Blessings to Paul's family and friends.

An icon of sorts from my childhood. WAFB was my parents' news station growing up. Will always associate Paul Gates, Mike Grahm, Donna Britt, Vernon Roger and the rest of that crew with early evening news while my parents cooked dinner.

Absolutely loved watching Paul. Very funny and he had an easy going laid back on air persona. He was probably the same way in person.
RIP Paul
