Im definitely no expert on the auto industry- but ive been wondering for the better part of two years why they haven’t done this…. It wasn’t THAT long ago that cars weren’t completely reliant on computer chips, and as much as i love my rear view camera and remote start, pano sunroof etc- i think most of us would be willing to do without for a while (esp if they are stating they will ‘update’ ur car at a later time) to be able to select from a larger inventory of cars and trucks instead of empty lots due to chip shortages .

Or they can just drop all of that unnecessary shite from the vehicle altogether. Vehicles have a functional purpose, but tiny dick dudes and women know don’t shite had to glam the shite up unnecessarily and frick it all for the rest of us.

The visibility is so bad out of modern cars, you can’t reliably back up without a camera.

I’m fine with not having all the bells and whistles in a vehicle. As long as it’s reliable, that’s all I need

I went so long without a backup camera that I never use mine. The only time I'll glance at it is to make sure nobody is walking behind me. I don't use it to back up.

Since we live in America, im in favor of having options and choices.. i had plenty of vehicles when i was younger that had roll down windows, no A/C, even no power steering in one case.. now that im in my 40s, i like the option of having some creature comforts .. i wont lie, i love my backup camera and leather interior.. BUT i think where automakers went astray is complete eliminating basic vehicles, short bed pickups w/manual transmissions and the like.. hopefully the chip shortage will get them back in the business of producing a RANGE of vehicles, from stripped down to fancy w/bells and whistles.. that would be the American way IMO .

So Ford is apologizing for saving their buyers half a tank of gas by removing a feature whose sole purpose is to frick up your starter?

I think it's worse than that. Say what you want, but the engine/car shakes on start up. Someone mentioned a delay in power steering. What all systems are "jolted" or "shook" just a little bit every time the starter/motor/alternator/water pump are spun up?

Such a stupid hack for minimal fuel savings.

The chip shortage has done the opposite. The limited number of chips are being used in the most profitable high end models with the most options.

Correct, that has been their M.O. for the past two years.. but it sounds like the premise of the thread is that the automakers are changing course somewhat .

If I could get a contemporarily engineered car, with all the advances in engine technology, but without all the extra computational bullshite, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Especially a turbo diesel in a mid-size truck and a wagon.

We had a 99 V70, naturally aspirated with a 5-cylinder engine. We kept it for 17 years and it's still going. If they would build a new version of that car, I would get it in a heartbeat. It had a lot of safety equipment, got about 30mpg on the highway. rode great, had a lot of room, and was as dependable as any car we have ever owned, including Hondas and Toyotas.

Chips?
The only chips I need are BBQ.
OK, sea salt and vinegar too maybe.

This isn't the first time cars shipped without paid for feature. After the tsunami in Japan in 2011 Audi shipped cars without the Navigation feature due to parts shortage. It apparently was a plug in type deal that could be added later when available.

Finally someone commented on that. It’s all I noticed in the article. What a great name for a spokesman.

Last year, the automaker gave customers the option to purchase an F-150 pickup truck without automatic start-stop for a $50 credit.

shite I bought a 2021 bronco and wish I had been given this option. That start-stop is annoying. You should have to manually turn it on, not turn it off every time you get in the car.

Les weight.
No electrical source.
Fewer parts.
Will likely never ever break.

Let's do.

A country that built an atomic bomb in a few years and went to the moon over fifty years ago on two decimal places cant build a fricking chip to run an air conditioner in a glorified minivan.

We should drag out the politicians and CEO's in this country and tar and feather their worthless asses before putting them a freighter with a 50/50 chance to make it to China.
