Auto News claims that Ford did not provide any information on when it would begin shipping vehicles without semiconductor chips or what specific models the automaker would be shipping. Ford spokesman Said Deep told the outlet that Ford would be building the Explorer midsize SUV and shipping them to dealerships without power rear HVAC controls. Consumers that purchase Explorers without this feature will get their chips installed for free within a year and receive access to the feature after. Buyers that purchase an Explorer will receive a price reduction, said Deep.

The decision to ship and sell vehicles without some features and chips comes at a time when Ford is seeing its inventory of unfinished vehicles increase. This isn’t the first time Ford has decided to sell a vehicle without a feature because of the chip shortage. Last year, the automaker gave customers the option to purchase an F-150 pickup truck without automatic start-stop for a $50 credit.

Ford isn’t alone in cutting out features in vehicles that consumers can purchase because of the chip shortage. General Motors removed a fuel management module, the wireless charging pad, and HD Radios from a few of its models. Tesla sold some of its electric vehicles without USB ports, Cadillac took its Super Cruise system off the table for a few of its models, and some BMWs aren’t available with a touchscreen.

If I could get a contemporarily engineered car, with all the advances in engine technology, but without all the extra computational bullshite, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. Especially a turbo diesel in a mid-size truck and a wagon.

Hell I would pay $50 to have mine permanently disabled. Which chip do I remove?

Hell, I'd take a brand new 1988 Monte SS with the only changes being an LS under the hood, Tremec 6 speed, taller front spindles and 4 wheel discs.

No other changes required.

*Of course it would never pass todays crash tests.

Todays cars with all the screens and electronics are going to be hell to keep going when 10-15 years old. Cadillac says the OLED screen that runs all the way across the dash in the Escalade is expected to last 15 years.

Some of the Mercedes we were looking at a couple of weeks ago didn't have power seats because of the chip shortage. $700 credit. We passed, would rather have the power seat.

They're cheapening the seats too, because of chips. For example, an XLT that might have gotten an 8 way seat could be getting 2 way adjustments....for the same price.

It is still a terrible time to buy a car.

My co-worker just bought a 2022 Sierra and it doesn't have the Auto-Stop feature. They said it was due to the chip shortage. I don't know of anyone who likes that feature anyway. I take mine off when i start my truck.

So were all of those new Broncos in the factory parking lots just missing out on the chip for some of these luxuries?

Me too. I’d be happy without Nav, touchscreen, camera, multi-zone AC (though this feature was in some cars well before the advent of computer controlled features), adjusting cruise, lane assist, etc.

My f150 seems to have a pretty significant delay between bringing power steering back on and the engine coming back up. It’s not that big a deal for me, but I’m fairly certain if my wife had this feature on her SUV that it would’ve caused a crash by now.

so... what's the problem? seems like they are gonna make the owners whole, and even help them out with the price, and considering we NEED auto sales for the economy to run correctly, i'm not seeing a problem here

Throwing my hat into this consensus. I hate center counsel touchscreens and lights with a passion. About the only feature I like that wasn’t standard in 2000 is the little notification/signal when someone is passing in your blind spot.

I’d take a 2022 Bronco built to the specs of a chip free 1983 Bronco any day of the week.

It's $10 for the vehicle and $45,000 to $75,000 with a chip.
