re: Ford F150 - 2.7L vs 3.5L

This is my hill to die on: Ford 2.7L is one of the best Ford engines ever made. Dont trust me, go search.
The 10 speed transmission, not so much. Get early 6 speed or post-CDF drum fix 10speed. Its a big deal, rebuild/rebuilt job is $7k-$10k and wont last 30k miles if not done correctly.
The 2.7L nor 3.5L is what limits the F150, however the 3.5L does have a list of common problem areas specific to 3.5. But even then, most problems you will see are not engine.
The 2.7L can tow, its mostly the 1/2 ton part that limits it. My untuned 2.7 on 93 oct tows 7500lb GVWR travel trailer at 70mph in Louisiana, 65mph with slight hills. The only issue with towing is coolant and trans temps for steep hills which are easily regulated by speed. Even if I towed it 12 times a year around Gulf Coast, Im ok with 1/2 ton 2.7L. I do have supporting mods of max brakes, max tow, WDH, etc.

On the new trucks they are rare unless you get certain packages. Thats why I got a tremor. 5.0 and more skid plates

I have a F150 with This : 2.7L EcoBoost V6 engine producing 325 horsepower and 400 lb-ft of torque.
10-speed automatic transmission.
It will get up and go but also get's good gas millage, 25 MPG on the highway.

You will only notice a difference if towing something heavy. My previous truck (2019) had the 5.0. Current (2024) has the 2.7 and I was given a loaner for a week with the 3.5 so I've driven them all. If you aren't towing anything or just light towing (I routinely tow a light 6x9 single axle utility trailer) you won't notice a difference. At least I didn't.

Supposedly they fixed the cam phaser issues on the 3.5 late 2022 manf so go with 2023 or newer to avoid that. Then change oil per spec every 5,000 miles and that’s as good as you can do.
Then 2.7 is a really good motor too though so either will be fine. It has great reviews.
If I had any option I’d pick the 5.0 but couldn’t find that with everything else I wanted.

Meanwhile, GM is going back to the 5.7 liter.
Meanwhile, they can't get the 6.2L's right.

We got the 2.7l F-150 new in '22. 15 months and 29,000 miles later, Ford replaced my engine. So that wasnt fun. However, one of the loaners we got was the 5.0 Coyote and that thing was nice. Had power and got the same mileage as the 2.7l eco.

I have the 3.5 in my 2024 f150 and in my wife’s expedition. I had an earlier 3.5 2014 model and that had some minor issues. But I really love the 3.5. It’s somewhat harder to find the 5.0.
My f150 is awesome and fun to drive especially in sport mode.

I would go with the 5.0 coyote.
Damn. I had no idea Ford still made a V8 for half tons
They have a 5.2 option as well, get your motor running baw

2.7 is the best daily driver and some towing but the resell is the worst of the 3 engine options.
5.0 is the highest resell by a good bit, people still don’t trust the Ecoboost

They do, except for Platinum or King Ranch. Those can only get 3.5L

It took Ford a long time to get the 3.5 to where it could be called reliable.
The 2.7 has had its teething issues also.
Of the 3, I believe the 5.0 is probably the simplest, and most reliable motor.
With that said, the Ford product is not great and they would all need major repairs sooner than they should IMHO.

I've got a 2.7. I don't tow but do light hauling. No problems. It's the STX trim line.

What is a better full size option?
GMC/Chevy..nope

I have a 2018 5.0 and I'm at 220,000 miles. Extremely solid engine.

I have the 2.7L in my 2018 F150. I call it the "Little engine that could".
That thing makes a great daily driver. It is plenty quick enough to merge with traffic. And it easily pulls my boat. (17ft aluminum boat thats heavier than it looks because of all the fishing shite I have in it.) I was actually getting the advertised 26mpg/hwy before I put a small lift and upgraded the tire size and all-terrain tires. Then the mpg fell to about 24mpg. Then I got a letter from Ford telling me that there is a software update available. Ol' baw came to the house to do the update. Since then my mpg was bumped to about 25mpg/hwy and it smoothed out the shifting of the transmission (3rd - 4th-5th gears). I drive country roads to and from work going 50-55mph.
If you are not pulling anything too heavy the 2.7L makes for a great motor. Easily pulls small to medium loads. Plenty quick enough. Solid little motor. Ford did good with that motor.
Recommend!

Not by any stretch an expert on them but I agree with this completely.
I have a '22 toyota and it's been perfect for me thankfully. I did get a new engine at 55k miles but I never had any issues with the old one.
I do think that right now, toyota has the best transmission of all of them.
I'd probably buy another and I'd also look at a Ford. But definitely not the other 2.

The 2.7 seems to have less recalls
