On a serious note....just had a friend (53) diagnosed with prostate cancer. It had already spread to his lymph nodes. He's now doing chemo at MDA in Houston.
Told me he didn't think it was anything more than getting old. He was having to get up at night and go the bathroom a couple of times each night and was also having trouble actually urinating. Had the urge, but not much would come out.
Keep getting checked my man.

He should have know what was up when he asked the doctor where he could lay his pants during the prostate exam and the the Dr’s answer was “over there with mine”.

At 40? Why? Are you at high risk? From what I understand, digital exam is no longer routinely done. PSA screening is first line, and even it's somewhat controversial for men at any age who are not at elevated risk. It's your decision whether to be screened at all, and your doctor is supposed to inform you of all this and help you decide. All you baws getting the ol' finger by default, I just don't know...

This most of the physicians now days do PSA tests. Much better at finding a problem than the old method. In fact mine, and my buddies, physicians both told us the same thing...catching a prostate issue is rare with the finger test, and the blood test is more accurate. Guys are also more willing to get that yearly scan versus the other, and so thereby hopefully increase the number of early catches. You need a younger physician.
Edit: I read that it’s controversial at 40 in this thread, but most insurance covers it with your yearly physical. We have a healthy policy that in order to qualify you get yearly blood work. PSA can be screened so might as well. No harm in being safe in my mind.

PSA test is actually a pretty bad test, with very high false positive and false negative rates. Treating for prostate cancer has high morbidity, and failing to treat it often won't be what kills you anyway, because the cancer grows so slowly. Unless you're at high risk, it's very reasonable to decline to be tested for it; if you're unlucky to have a fast growing cancer, early detection may not be much help anyway.

I had one when I was around 25. Surprisingly, the finger in the arse wasn’t the worst part. It was the fricking axle grease they used for lube that lingered in there for a week that kept reminding you that you had a finger in your arse that was the worst part.
