This message needs to become mainstream. For some reason it surprised me every time, the amount of people who actually give to these fricks.
One day, I was at the traffic light at the college drive exit off of i-10. There were a lot of cars stopped and this one dude was walking in between cars and at least, every other car would give him something. It was the most I think I ever saw given to a beggar at once. It seemed like the majority of people just throw some change in the bucket, but there were one or two people who slide a bill out their window.
Some people evidently feel bad for them and feel bad about themselves if they don't give them something, but there are resources available to those who are truly in need. And I am not going to blame the beggars.. It takes someone with little pride and no shame to sit by traffic lights and ask for money, but the reason they are there is because people are giving them money. Don't feel bad for these people.

I saw a car few days ago stop with a green light and honk the horn to get the "beggar's" attention to come get the money.

Reality is they are not worthless bums, they are smart con men that know how stupid the "feelings" section of society is and this they pray on their stupidity laughing all the way to the bank. No different than the 3 card monty players that scam tourists for money every day in NOLA, Boston, NY etc.

I never give money to stop light peddlers. They are scam artists. Occasionally will buy a gatorade and candy bar for someone who I can tell has real mental issues. Did buy some gas for a guy at an interstate gas station the other day, but he seemed quite genuine

I saw a guy in N.O. a few months back holding a sign which read:
Not Gonna Lie
I Need A Beer
Not Gonna Lie
I Need A Beer

This scam is alive and well at busy intersections in cities everywhere. It works according to the same principle that drives telemarketerers to keep calling. And fund raising/ Won’t You Donate to...xyz? appeals by letter or in legit retailers or on TV. Sheer numbers and persistence pays off.

You people act like these guys are living the high life. Have you seen how expensive heroin is these days? I doubt he’s even storing anything away for retirement.
I’ve spoken with many of these people and I know for a fact that some of them put away a little heroin each week for retirement.

There's about a 30-35 year old white dude that hangs out at the Exxon at the corner of Airline and Coursey. He sits in front of the store and follows people to their vehicles giving them some sob story. He's been there for months. I guess he has finally remembered me because he's stopped following me.
That guy had been hitting up all the other customers at that station as I was filling up. I had to go inside for something. When I came out he saw me and made a beeline for me. He had just opened his mouth to say something, and I said "Say man, you got a couple of dollars you could loan me?" The dude at the next pump who had just given him some cash busted out laughing, as the beggar replied, "All I can give you is about 25 cents. " I chuckled, got in my car, and drove off.

Hopefully St. George will have some sort of ordinance allowing the Sheriff to scoop these folks up and drop them off in New Orleans.
