How are we doing with yesterday's Gospel, especially as we consider the current political climate? It's a struggle for sure.
Gospel
Luke 6:27-38
Jesus said to his disciples:
“To you who hear I say,
love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well,
and from the person who takes your cloak,
do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you,
and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back.
Do to others as you would have them do to you.
For if you love those who love you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners love those who love them.
And if you do good to those who do good to you,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners do the same.
If you lend money to those from whom you expect repayment,
what credit is that to you?
Even sinners lend to sinners,
and get back the same amount.
But rather, love your enemies and do good to them,
and lend expecting nothing back;
then your reward will be great
and you will be children of the Most High,
for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked.
Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
“Stop judging and you will not be judged.
Stop condemning and you will not be condemned.
Forgive and you will be forgiven.
Give, and gifts will be given to you;
a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing,
will be poured into your lap.
For the measure with which you measure
will in return be measured out to you.”

It's hard to do. That's one of many reasons Jesus had to die for our sins.
The other thing that's hard about praying for your enemies is I don't want to classify someone as my enemy.

I'm refraining from calling 70% of the PT board retards today.

I have no issue handing someone my money, shoes, clothes, etc. If someone hits me I am going to be violent back, thats the one I have the hardest time with. As for possessions, or people stealing from me, I honestly dont care. Its almost like, they caught me slipplin, because in all cases, I did make a mistake.

It is the fringe that cause all the grief in our country. I feel pity when I see a politics drunk American putting in hours of their free time to spread their hate.

I think this is Jesus' message of forgiveness and how it's healing.
There needs to be time between stimulus and forgiveness though. That's the human condition. But if you are working toward the good (forgiveness in this case) despite how vengeful you feel and how close you are to negative stimuli you are going in the proper direction.

Better than I use to. The less I become entangled in this world the freer I become...a lot has to do with expectations-which are a reflection of the heart.

Jesus said He did not come to bring peace but a sword

I do my best daily to follow all of that, fail at it again and again, repent and ask for forgiveness, try not to do it again, and am grateful for the mercy he shows me for falling short, knowing he’s covered all my shortness with his blood, and look forward to enjoying his presence in eternity.
That’s how I deal with it.

Jesus is talking here about the posture of one's heart. He doesn't mean that you cannot defend yourself or that you must subject yourself to abuses such as physical, sexual or emotional. It's all about our heart not seeking revenge and not carrying the bitterness of the wrongs other have committed against us. We know that Jesus teaches us to rebuke those brothers who harm us. Forgiveness is not a get out of jail free card for bad behavior.
Ultimately, he is asking us to trust God. Forgiveness doesn't mean that there are no consequences or that God has forgotten that we have been wronged and violated. Forgiveness is simply my willing surrender to God by placing my trust that he, as the perfect judge, will handle the situation accordingly.
Like everything else Jesus taught, it's about our hearts. God wants our hearts and our trust.

But by the grace of God go I. We live in a sinful fallen world. But God loved us so much that he sent his Son Jesus to take upon himself the sins of all mankind. The blood of Jesus is the only way to heaven. The grace he gives us is free to anyone who asks Jesus to come into their heart. This is our only hope this side of the Jordan. Praise God!!!

I'm getting better by not engaging in the on line debates, or even reading much of the political board.

Nope. No struggle at all. As a matter of fact, I'm enjoying every moment of it.

The Bible says God forgives if you sincerely ask him for forgiveness, even with your last breath.
When I encounter someone in sincere need of help, I will help them if I can.
When I encounter someone who seeks help, and I believe their intention is to hurt others, even if in a misguided/ignorant attempt, I will not help them.
For instance, a panhandler begs me for money, but I believe he will use money he gets for drugs, I do not feel obligated as a Christian to give them anything.
One difference between us and God is, He knows the "heart" of a man, and I can only guess logically.
The Gospel must be taken in context. Did Jesus not throw the priests out of the temple? Do you not think they protested and claimed to be righteous?
I do not think the Gospel suggests we should support evil, damning or injurious behavior when it is guised as charitable.
Though I am but a humble sinner, I believe I understand the Gospel.

Whenever I see these sort of biblical quotes they tend to lean towards a pacifist attitude but clearly that will only get you so far before needing thy staff.

Those are characteristics of how a Christian should be. Our "job" is to plant seeds.

Are you suggesting the Sermon on the Plateau is directed to national policies? Or, are you inquiring about following Jesus in the 21st Century?
IMO, believers can follow Jesus in any political climate (and have done so and do so to this day).
