re: For those of you working office desk jobs - how do you stay coherent all day?

I don't know how someone does it either. Been there, done it, and don't want to do it again.
I guess if you like what you do and stay busy, then the day can fly, but working in an office is not for me.
I like to be in and out of the office. So thankful I work from home and make a decent living (by OT standards) doing it.

Do companies follow your internet history????

I did it for about a month. First week and a half was good because I was busy the entire day. After that, I spent most of my time fricking around on the internet or sleeping/smoking cigs outside. Went down in a blaze of glory after a month

The trick is staying busy. I can guarantee you there's always something to be done to impress the hell out of your bosses because they don't want to do it. Once you stop, you're done for.
Early on, I almost fell asleep a couple of times when things would come to a standstill. But now, I have like 5-6 mini projects that I can work on when things get slow. Get bored with one, change it up. And while I might not ever finish them by myself, I'll have done a shite loans and my bosses will be impressed.

What is the actual work being done? Emails, data entry, something else?
Podcasts are great, if you're just doing busywork.

Which is so fricking infuriating. We shouldnt have to stare at the wall just cause farmers used to work 8 hour days.
I can promise you that farmers work much more than an 8 hr day, except for the winter when all they do is hunt.

Chewing gum in the afternoon.
I've worked out a balance in 30 years in IT. Caffeine all day, taper in the afternoon. Not too much such that I can't sleep at night. Get up every hour and walk around, preferably up and down the stairs. Meetings can pump you up.
The main thing has already been mentioned...find something to do and set a goal, then attack it with zest.

Stay busy, get up from your desk frequently, but the best advice and biggest difference for me is what I eat at lunch. A light, healthy lunch with low carbs and I'm awake and alert all afternoon. But if I eat a heavy shitty lunch ( fried foods, rice, pasta, breads, etc), I'm dying. Maybe it's my age, but I've tried to eat lighter lunches and it's made a big difference. I can have alcohol at lunch and stay awake. But a heavy meal is the end of me.

actually, I find myself more tired at the end of a day in the office than I do a summertime day in the field...never really thought that would be the case.
I find that time goes a lot more slowly when you are learning a new job than it does once you get your feet under you. once you really know what is going on, you can motivate yourself to push new projects or solve new problems that are a lot more challenging than the mundane stuff that you have to do when you are new.
also, I find that even when working on something interesting, I have to get out of the office for lunch...even if I bring lunch from home, I have to go somewhere else to eat just so I can get away.
