There seemed to have been a much bigger deal made of the bicentennial in 1976. I vaguely remember it, but it seemed like people came together and celebrated. In my small town, I'm told (by older siblings), that many of the men of the town grew out beards and marched in a parade as the founding fathers.
I don't get much vibe of the 250 anniversary, I realize everything now is politicalized and half the country hates the other half, but I was hoping the country would come together for this.

Unfortunately that division will never reunite. Just too many things that each side is not willing to budge on. We need to just get the next civil war behind us, because we can't continue as a country as we are going now.

What are you expecting a “come together” to look like? We are a nation of neighborhoods and localities. Go experience the world with those people and don’t wait for some news article showing a group together at a monument.

I am not sure of your question. But yeah, it was much different then. Our country was much more unified, overall

What? I'll assure you I've been to more states and countries than you.
In 76, small towns all over the country came tother and had parades and events. Chevy released a bicentennial edition truck.
I was just hoping the country would come together, we've let social media and the 24 news divide us and made us hate each other.

What tells you the country has not “come together” for America 250…? What would good even look like to you to signal us coming together?

I don't foresee a civil war, the country is just going to get more and more shitty. One side or the other is eventually going to seize complete control of the country. Once true democracy and freedom are gone, the race to the Botton will intensely.

I was 16 in '76, so I remember it well. Yes, we were more united as a country, but companies and businesses over-hyped the shite out of it, too. Ads for tires, TV's, cars, and damn near everything had the word "Bicentennial" attached to it. About the only product I didn't see was Bicentennial toilet paper.
I love this country, but honestly, I was happy when the calendar turned to July 5th, as I had a bad case of Bicentennial fatigue.

Last time this country was close to united was WWII
we were not united over Korea
we have essentially become 2 countries: the coasts and cities, and everywhere else

I'm curious how the media would have pushed the 250th had a Democrat won the White House.

Um, which founding fathers had beards?

They would have hyped the shite out of it, even as it emphasized any negatives they could find.

I agree completely….i remember Independence Day like it was last week. I was about 10 years old and remember everything that went on in my little town. I actually still have a few coffee cups etc. that I got back then commemorating the event. I don’t have a single thing from this time around.
People don’t seem to be nearly as proud of their country anymore….

In 1976, I was 8. I still remember the celebrations, the Freedom Train, the Bicentennial coins. - That makes me want to go dig into some jars of coins I have (yeah, I'm old since I have that
) to find some of the 1776-1976 quarters. Haven't seen one in awhile.

I graduated from high school in 1976. I have said it a number of times on here the past two weeks. A much bigger deal was made of it back then.

The Country has united for America 250 in real life.

I had forgotten about those! I believe that was the first coin I remember to commemorate a particular event. I certainly still have some of those….50 years later!

There are new coins for 2026. There is a very limited release of some quarters that are going straight into circulation this week. Look it up and familiarize yourself with them so you can pocket one should you get it. Not all 2026 quarters will be the same.
I saw today, 2026 $100 bills will have the President’s signature.
