For our OT airline pilots: How many times have y’all made go-arounds that were your fault?

Just sitting here watching TWC hurricane coverage, planes land at ATL, and having a cold beer at the Hilton. It was evident to me that an incoming plane on final was on a much higher glide path than other planes. I said “you’re too high Cole” to myself as he was probably a few miles out. Sure as shite, as he got closer to I-85 at west end of airport, he gassed it and opted for a go around. Looked like a Delta 737 or A320 as he flew by the window.

Didn’t see anything obstructing runway so assuming pilot error because another plane was already cleared and rolling down runway for takeoff on the parallel runway. I guess he could’ve been waived off by ATC, but appeared to me the pilot(s) f’d it up. Just curious what’s y’all’s average per year as I’ve never seen one make a go around? Do y’all get shite talked in pilot lounge when that happens?

SO, you're not really a pilot?

As a controller you do the job long enough it will happen. Some for emergencies, some for weather, and sometimes for spacing. Very rarely have I seen a pilot just blow the approach and have to do a missed approach where one of the three scenarios I mentioned didn't exist. I am not talking about student pilots in a single engine Cessna either.

I did a go around on my first solo

Didn’t feel coordinated well enough so I hit the gas, flaps incrementally upped, and GTFO

I was on a United flight that was landing in BR that has to go around. It was stormy and I think they hit minimums without seeing the runway. Either that or wind shear. It is a pretty aggressive feeling from the passenger experience

Done quite a few (atleast 4 I can think of) for airplanes delaying on the runway so ATC sent us around. Have had 1 I can distinctly remember I initiated for wind shear in Newark. Never had to do one for an unstable approach or anything

I had 2 in the same attempted landing at LGA. It was 15 years ago, but I think birds were involved. Pilot wasn’t super specific, but we were definitely under 250 feet. I maybe had another go around in an A380 or a 777 one other time, but it was much less dramatic.

Experienced one at LGA, had just crossed over the river so we were pretty low and the pilot goosed it and pulled up as we crossed from river to tarmac. Said there was a vehicle on the runway, was quite the experience.

My only go arounds in 30 plus years of professional flying have been the result of ATC or general aviation pilots not following instructions.

I have seen that happen a good bit ,but it is part of the learning process. We had a 17 year old girl on her first solo and it was calm winds when she took off and then the winds picked up and it was about 10-15 knt crosswind. The poor girl panicked a bit and we had to get her fight instructor on the radio to talk her down. She got it down after the third attempt, but yeah student pilots especially young ones sometimes get flustered or nervous and things happen. When it comes to experienced pilots in military, commercial, or high performance general aviation aircraft rarely will they have a go around that is their fault. Fuel is expensive and time is money.

had a go around in Houston in the 90's. We were down to about 300 feet when the pilot hammers the throttles and rotates the plane up. Came on the intercom to explain there was another plane on our runway

Same here in 1978 Landing at Ohara in a Delta L-1011 one night. flight was packed full, with very few empty seats. Pilot was just on runway and then suddenly everything went wide open with nose going at a sharp angle and a sharp turn as soon as he got the wheels off the runway.

Plane was popping and more than one overhead came open. As soon as he got it in the air and turning, he came on the PA and said, "You may have noticed we took off just after touching down. We did that to avert hitting another plane that pulled onto the runway. Not to worry, we will go right around and land."

When we landed after a fairly tight circle, there were firetrucks beside the runway with lights shining on us as we rolled past them. I think they were worried about a tail or wing strike on the runway.

I’ve been on 2 that were a few feet from the concrete and went full engine ascent, both in the last 3 years.

I am a GA pilot with only about 850 hours. I used to pride myself on never having to go around. But I was landing at a mountain airport near one of the national parks and the valley it was in was tight. I had to go around twice. On my third approach my wife was vomiting, so I was all in on that one.
