How old are you? I’ve had this condition since age 10. Is that old?

You sound like you have vertigo. I had it bad. Doctors can't help. They'll give you some exercises to do at home. Started taking ginger root and my vertigo stopped. Couldn't go squirrel hunting because I got dizzy looking up. Ancient sailors took ginger root for seasickness. Find it at Walmart. Take a bunch and then taper off. Do your research on Google. Worked for me when nothing else did. Good luck. It can happen any age. I'm 75.

Approaching 55. Ladders are OK from a height and balance perspective, even high ones. I worry more about the ladder slipping so more often have a spotter at the base. Roofs though, make me nervous. I can do one story but not two.

The Bible talks about this. Says, "Lo, I am with you always." Doesn't say anything about being on a 24' extension ladder.

I’m good on my 16’ ladder, but last Xmas I realized my days above that are numbered. My neighbor loaned me his 24’ to get up on my roofline to hang Xmas lights and when I got to the top I felt really unsafe and got down. Hired that one out.

I’m in my mid ‘50s and I have cut way back on climbing. As a matter of fact, I need to paint a spot or two on my fascia and have been putting it off because I dread climbing on the ladder.

I've been a female by genetics my whole (now rather long) life. I never had any urge to argue with my chromosomes.

It's pretty common that when people get older heights become a problem. Maybe it's a balance issue.

Old timer I know, mid 70's, is still jumping his ladder to move it side to side.

I do some painting on the side. Haven’t really noticed a big difference from when I was younger. I have a 24’ extension ladder and that’s as high as I’m comfortable climbing. If I can’t reach it with that ladder, I turn the job down. Except for one job I did a couple years ago. I was a few feet short, so I put the ladder in the pickup bed to reach the peak.

That said, I have a freaking smoke detector on the highest part of our ceiling that's freaking 20ft high. So once a year I have to get up there to change the battery. I think next year the smoke detector is coming down for good.
You should call the fire department. They do that for free here if you live in the city. Probably most places they will.

I'm 80 and I still climb ladders. Last week I climbed onto the roof and used a leaf blower to clean the roof and gutters.
You must have one of those 4/12 pitch roofs. Over in Dallas they are usually all 12/12 pitch or 14/12 pitch roofs. You wouldn't get up on your roof, not at all!

At least those steep roofs don't hold as much trash.

I've thought a lot about building a roof robot. Just put it up there and drive it around via remote control to clean the roof.

I know what you mean. As a teen I’d work 18’ off the ground with a concrete driveway to break my fall and that never scared me. Then one time in my 30s I had a severe bout of vertigo and that messed up my sense of balance for a long time.. So I’m very careful if I have to go on any extension ladder and it needs to have a wide base for stability.

I’ve always had my doubts about extension ladders. Or maybe more doubting my ability to stay on it. They just feel like they could slide

Very timely discussion for me. My cousin just fell from an extension ladder when the oak tree branch he leaned it on snapped sending him 20 feet down. He's been in the hospital for over 5 weeks now making very slow progress (but he's alive with all extremities functioning).

Branch was rotten on the inside and could not be seen from the ground. Some things are better off left to the professionals. I guess that's why tree service companies are so expensive.

If you use one, be very very careful.
