For my 100K post, a question for the OT regarding online reviews

How much stock do you put in online reviews? Do you make buying decisions based upon reviews you read? Amazon, VRBO, restaurants?

I recently booked a vacation rental for later this year. Reviews for the rental company on Google reviews were favorable, so were they on sites like VRBO and Expedia, but Yelp reviews for them were almost universally horrible. Not sure what to make of that.

Also, I do look at Amazon reviews, but it seems like about 1/3 of the time, you can tell that some of the reviews are not about the product listed. Weird.

Ok, and I'll take upvotes for my 100K post

Amazon Reviews are trash unless they post a photo most of the time. As a person who uses the internet a lot, I have developed a decent eye for spotting fake reviews, just simply by how they word things or if other reviews are shockingly similar.

Yeah but it's more about what they say in the review than the star rating. I see 2 and 3 star ratings for stupid stuff like, “the box of came in had a hole in it. Everything else worked great!”

Amazon reviews

I’ve found that a lot of the one and two star reviews are from people who don’t know how to or aren’t using the product properly. I generally ignore Amazon reviews for that reason. If it’s a high priced product or service, I’m going to get as much information from as many different sources as possible before pulling the trigger.

100,000 hopefully this was mostly done while "on the clock".

Amazon is just weird. I’ll skim through the reviews to make sure its not bot-ish.

If its a product offered in other places or a restaurant/destination then I’ll check multiple review sites.

I look for trends and, in the case of negative reviews, I look for specifics of what was wrong.

You will always have high reviews and low reviews due to people gaming things on both ends. But sometimes it is just plain stupid.

To throw a theoretical out there, someone may have put a 1 star on an X Box One X because their kid couldn’t play Super Mario on it. Super Mario is a Nintendo exclusive so the chances of playing it on a non-Nintendo modern console are slim and none.

If everyone complains about the same thing though? Usually worth taking into consideration.

100K posts and I don't even know who the hell you are. That's impressive.

I normally look at the negative and 1 star reviews first. If the product is legitimately shitty, the posts will reflect that and explain why.

If the 1 star reviews are stupid shite like "post office lost my purchase," or "Love the product, but gave one star because box was a little ripped" then I know the favorable reviews are probably correct.

I always look at the 1 star reviews. If these reviews contain stuff like, the shipment arrived late or they sent the wrong item, then I am more confident that the product might be ok because people aren't actually complaining about the product.

Yeah, flooding, while devastating and tragic, is typically very localized.
You can have one house swept downstream and the house right next to it untouched.

This.

I read all the negatives first. Then I read all the reviews that have pictures.

Then if I'm still unsure I check out the product on multiple sites.
