It almost happened weeks ago when reportedly Chinese backed Bitcoin Cash miners tried to collapse BTC in favor or BCH. Though that was pre-10k.

Traditionally, rich people in a country ripe for revolution would buy real estate or art in Europe or the US as a way of protecting their assets. Megayachts too. BTC is a great way to park your assets in a way that will escape government goons in your home country, whether that country is Venezuela, Niger, China, what have you.
I suspect that what has really driven the current spike is that BTC transactions are now easy for not just the wealthy in these countries, but also the merely well-to-do.
