Not reading all of the replies but why on earth would you not go by yourself and leave kids home with the wife? Stop being a beta

So now I'm thinking my wife will have to come too, but I am trying to determine which of the two options below is best

1- wife stays home, kids and I each get our own seat (3)
2- wife comes, 1 year old in lap. (3 seats).

If I choose to be cheap and not get 4 seats does it make more sense to have the wife (option 2) or the extra seat (option 1)?

I’ve made over 20 trips to Taiwan... several more to SK and Vietnam.

I have four kids of my own.

So trust me when I say this: leave the kids at home with a family member and take your wife.

You’re looking at 24-26 hours of travel time. That is not going to be fun for you or your kids. Plus, when you get there, you and the kids will be so off schedule that your sister isn’t going to be able to really spend quality time with them or you.

Take the kids when they’re older. Take the wife now.

Bring the wife and give the 1 year old two laps to switch back and forth between.

I know it is a parenting faux pas to allow very small children electronic device usage but this is your sanity we are talking about here. I brought a tablet for each child pre-loaded with their favorite movies and memorization games with little headphones and just let them zone out for the duration of the flight. I fed them gummy bears/worms to keep them from realizing their ears were popping and it went extremely well...

Good luck.

With all due respect to your sister and family, if they don't give a shite enough to jump on a flight to you to spare your 1 year old the trip, they are really not interested in seeing your kids.

The right decision.

I wouldn't be mad at you at all. I would just feel really really bad for you and what you'll be going through.

I once had a 14 hour flight to Istanbul and was seated near a toddler. I don't know what this kids parents did but I didn't hear him cry the entire trip.

Back in the US for now. The wife is getting anxious for a trip back home to CMR so I will be in the same boat/plane as you soon.

I didn't intend to but it happened. All of us are homesick right now. Challenge for you. Name a place on the north side of DLA that starts with a "M"

if it is a 5 seat middle row and 2 on the side I would (somewhat shady) rent the seats that I have capitalized X's

xx XxXXx xx

skip a seat between you 2 and hope that no one books that seat and them BOOM 4 seats, only paid for 3. Also, Ipad with many movies and benedryl for the long night flight. They will sleep the whole time.

This is probably the right decision.

I’ve flown across country multiple times with 2 kids under 4 and to London once.

A couple tips, get an entire row to your own family so you don’t have some other person with you. If you can get an entire middle row that’s the best. Both parents sit on the outside and each have an aisle then the kids are in the middle.

We’ve let our little kid sleep on the floor. Probably not the safest thing...but it works and makes everyone happy.

Almost all flights now have tons of content on their own TVs. But we down load 2-3 new series for them on the iPad.

Try and watch shows/ movies and read books about where you are going (china). For example the Disney movie Mulan. To get them interested and educated. Our now 5 year old routinely talks about our trip to England almost 2 years ago.

It’s not about them remembering, it’s about your entire experience. Good luck

You are probably gonna be on a flight with a bunch of Asians, so frick what any of them thinks. Seats for all, btw.

I’m not trying to be mean, but you are not a very smart person if you are really gonna board a 12.5 hour flight with 2 kids under 5.

And you might be borderline retarded if you are going to attempt this plan without everyone having a seat.

And you definitely ride the short bus if you try to take on this venture without help (aka your wife).

As others have said, why go through all this trouble when your kids won’t even remember it? Tell your selfish arse sister to get her arse to the states if she wants to see your kids before they are 10. Cuz dragging young kids across the globe is a terrible idea.

Edit: trip will be better with just you and the 4 year old. I still don’t think it’s worth it considering he won’t remember but I guess it’s a nice gesture for your sister.
