I'm planning a trip with my two boys 4 and 1 (well closer to 2, and an absolute terror. Apologies if you're on my flight).

This will take place next month, and their mom was not scheduled to come with us.

Initially,I was going to have the one year old in my lap and have seats for myself and the 4 year old. As I start reading articles online I quickly found out that it was a terrible idea.

So now I'm thinking my wife will have to come too, but I am trying to determine which of the two options below is best

1- wife stays home, kids and I each get our own seat (3)
2- wife comes, 1 year old in lap. (3 seats).

If I choose to be cheap and not get 4 seats does it make more sense to have the wife (option 2) or the extra seat (option 1)?

Planning late and around the holidays, so I'm trying to pinch pennies here.
Visiting my sister in Beijing, and longest segment is about 12.5 hrs.

Bring your wife and get the 4 seats, the babies can nap in between you and your wife.

Godspeed, bro.
My guess is that if you get just the 3 seats, perhaps you can get all 3 together on some side of the plane, but on an international flying widebody jet, you need to determine the seat arrangements.
If it's 3-aisle-4-aisle-3, you could get those 3 on either side and be fine.
But, if it's 2-aisle-5-aisle-2, that poses more problems.

If you are too poor for noise cancelling Bose headphones, then you shouldn't be flying internationally

You're going to be very popular. You're also insane. Too far for most adults. Travel priorities should be reversed, they should be coming to see you.

I flew to Australia late last year and there was a Mother flying with two kids around those ages. I have never felt more sorry for someone then her in that situation.

At the 1-2 year age there is no reasoning with a child. They are going to whine, cry, and scream and you can't stop it. And it will happen.

I dread this flight everytime, couldn't imagine doing this with a young child.

I once had a 14 hour flight to Istanbul and was seated near a toddler. I don't know what this kids parents did but I didn't hear him cry the entire trip.

Flew to india with 3 year old twins. Get a seat for every kid. Also get some cheap fire tablets to keep them occupied.
Lot of snacks. They are not going to be perfect. If you prepare for worst, you will do better.

Sooner or later, some fool is gonna recommend you take an overnight flight or red eye, saying something like “it’ll be fine, they’ll sleep the whole time”

When they sleep the whole time, sure, it works fine.

But when they don’t, you are locked in for 12 fricking miserable hours.

Whoever is watching the 4 year old in option two should watch both kids, and you and the wife go.

Otherwise, this would be my definition of hell.

Get some ear plugs and pass them out with a sorry note to everyone around you. Instant flight karma.
