I thought that Costa Rica was relatively safe for Americans.

It is not safe to walk around outside the San Jose airport hotels. Foreigners are targeted for armed robbery there. The hotels have good security but it is a bad idea to leave them for a walk. Downtown San Jose is not entirely safe either. Away from San Jose it it generally very safe.

If I had to go back and live in Florida, I would vanish as well.

Here we go again! Some gal goes missing. Costa Rica is the worlds most destined retirement spot and now it’s about to get a media storm of bad press. And they’re far less “sketchy” than we are. Grill the shite outta her family and associates. Those be the culprits majority of the time anyway.

It’s most likely Polish, Croatian or Serbian and has been changed from the original spelling.

everh Building I’ve ever worked in had “guards“. They were just glorified doormen. Maybe that’s what they meant.

When my family travels places, we typically leave at the same time. Why did this chick (and her SIL) decide that it was a good idea to stay alone in a sketchy AirBnB?

And, once they saw how sketchy the AirBnB was (so sketchy that it required guards and they couldn't leave alone), why didn't they choose another one?

Agree.

AirBnb has its place and I don't avoid it entirely.. but I find that it is better used to get a really baller pad with a bunch of friends than it is to use it in a place like Costa Rica as a young woman alone in order to save some $$.

Sister in law leaves her alone in Costa Rica on her birthday. That seems like a horrible idea, as it turned out to be.

But not in the capital city of San Jose. There are some bad areas around the main city. After you get out of town you're golden for the most part. Going there soon

It is....outside of San Jose.

When I went we were told specifically to not venture around San Jose at night. Only go downtown during daylight hours and even then watch your back. Most people only use San Jose as a place to fly in/out of CR, staying no more than a night there.

It is still a third world country with a lot of poor people. While they may not have a lot of violent crime...they do have lots of theft. You just have to be a smart tourist and you will be fine.

I’ll usually go through Liberia (LIR) Airport or if I have to route through San Jose, I fly Sansa and don’t ever leave the SJO property.

I’ve done downtown San Jose once alone during the daytime.

Nevermore.

Honestly not much to see there to boot.

RIP American Chick, not a good birthday plan there.

A young woman is more than likely dead and the OT makes jokes about her.
