Fox News: Florida woman vanishes in Costa Rica while celebrating birthday

quote:

A family is searching for answers after a Florida woman celebrating her birthday with her sister-in-law vanished last week in Costa Rica -- just hours before she was reportedly set to return to the United States.

Carla Stefaniak, of Miami, was set to return home after celebrating her 36th birthday in Central America, according to FOX13. April Burton, Stefaniak’s sister-in-law left Costa Rica on Tuesday, a day earlier than when she was scheduled to return.

Burton said the last time she saw Stefaniak was when Stefaniak accompanied her to the airport.

“It was her birthday, and it makes me feel really bad. I do feel guilty because I left early,” Burton told FOX13 on Sunday.

After dropping off Burton on Tuesday, Stefaniak paid an Uber driver to give her a tour around San Jose, her family said. She then called a friend and told them she was going to ask one of the guards at the Airbnb she was staying at to buy her a bottle of water – it was the last time Stefaniak’s family or friends heard from her.

quote:

The Airbnb owner told Stefaniak’s family she was last seen getting into an Uber with her luggage on Wednesday at around 5 a.m., FOX13 reported. But Stefaniak’s Uber records don't list that transaction.

“None of us really believe this 5 a.m. story because it really doesn't make sense,” Burton said. “We know she was abducted. There's no reason for her not to contact anyone.”

Burton said Stefaniak told her on Tuesday a rainstorm knocked the power out at her Airbnb, according to CBS News.

“She continued with, 'It's pretty sketchy here,’” Burton said.

I’ve vanished in Costa Rica several times but I always sobered up and came home. Sometimes it took longer than others

I thought that Costa Rica was relatively safe for Americans.

When my family travels places, we typically leave at the same time. Why did this chick (and her SIL) decide that it was a good idea to stay alone in a sketchy AirBnB?

And, once they saw how sketchy the AirBnB was (so sketchy that it required guards and they couldn't leave alone), why didn't they choose another one?

I'm not really into vacationing in places that require guards.

I too thought Costa Rica was pretty safe for Americans. Granted, when we went it was to a resort but we left and went to local spots and never felt uneasy. But I guess San Jose is the 'city' so there's probably seedy spots where you have to be careful

Someone doesn’t know how Darwin works.

On another note this young lady is thick of Venezuelan descent with huge breasts and bootay. I hope she is OK and they find her so I can effectively fantasize.

Well dont look at anywhere south of the US border.

"Guard" was probably just a mix of door guy, and security guard. it's a condo probably. Pretty common for locals to have "guards" walking the premises/house property.

The uber thing is the sketch part, and she shouldnt have been alone. Bad naive call there, but thats in most foreign destinations.

I totally understand travelling to these places and don't criticize people for doing it.

However, the US and Canada are big af and have so much to offer.

I don't disagree, but this was a honeymoon. And if it were up to me, we would have been at Yosemite or Yellowstone. My wive has slightly more expensive taste

Costa Rica may not be perfectly safe, it's a hell of a lot safer than Florida!

Bottom line: it's still a 3rd world country.
