I'm not blaming this woman at all. I personally would not allow myself to be shot at by supposed blanks, but I can totally understand her assuming it was safe. Terrible situation.

fricked up response.....fricked up

Exactly. Expecting a woman in a room full of senior citizens to get up there and know the difference between blanks is ridiculous. The kind of person that would go to this event probably believes there is no way things could turn out poorly at the hands of the police. It would have never crossed her mind to question them.

Why are they shooting blanks at senior citizens (or any citizens) in the first place? I didn't catch that in the article.

Alright everybody calm down. It was an accident. We all have accidents and make mistakes in one form or another. Also, the lady was 73. She didn't really have that much longer anyway. Her friends and family have had her for 73 years. That's more than a lot of folks so seems like there isn't much loss there

I mean all of your post in this thread have been about the woman,
the other side has pretty much been beat to death right? the cop definitely fricked up somehow to have shot her with a live round.
I would want to make 100% sure the gun is loaded with blanks before playing the victim so I brought up why wouldn't she have done the same thing...its called having a discussion.
I do think she has some responsibility for not taking the precautions SHE ( most intelligent people) should have taken.

It is a fricking terrible idea. Completely unnecessary.

I just assumed LucasP posted that.

No way most intelligent people would think twice. They might ask if it was safe or if blanks could cause a problem, but the vast majority are going to take the officer at his word and never ask to check the gun.

On LSU13's list, I bet item 2 did not happen. Blanks maybe put in the mag but a live round was still in the chamber. Now that I have typed this.....let me go read the article.

she learned her lesson
Sadly it will take the public (and most likely this board) much longer.

Right lets assume that she did know how to unload and disarm the gun safely....no guarantee that she could tell the live round from a blank.
Don't know...this is a real f'd up situation. I can guarantee you that PD won't be doing this type of "training" anymore. I can also guarantee you that that officers life has been changed for the way worse here....and that woman's family's lives have been changed for the way worse as well. No good.
In fact I'll say it...to have training where a real gun is pointed at a live person and the trigger is pulled is stupid. I don't care if the gun is unloaded, loaded with blanks, or otherwise. The person that approved/created this type of exercise just wasn't thinking right.

Lol wat.
Now you blame a population for being too trusting and compliant of police officers?

I used to think this board was smart...but they are a good representation of the public

I get where you are at....and trust me I'm in that neighborhood. I just think that to expect that of people who haven't had the level of training that I've had is maybe not reasonable.
Maybe it's not even training....I'd say people that simply haven't had exposure to guns. If I'd never held a gun before and was in a class learning about them for the first time at 73 years old...I'm fairly certain that if an officer said hey I'm going to point this gun at you and pull this trigger but the bullet is a blank and you'll be fine, I'd probably have not went along with that. However, that could be the extensive training/experience that I do have....the bottom line is I can't take my training out of this equation and that maybe skews my expectations of the level of responsibility of the victim here.
