A passenger on a Spirit Airlines flight to New Orleans on Tuesday is now banned for life from flying with the low-cost airline after vaping with his electronic cigarette mid-flight and setting off a smoke alarm, according to nola.com.

The report says the man, a 30-year-old St. Petersburg, Florida, resident traveling from Detroit, was also "heavily intoxicated" and smelled of alcohol, according to a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office deputy that met the plane when it landed at Louis Armstrong International Airport.

quote:

According to authorities, the man was caught by a flight attendant taking his e-cigarette out, inhaling from it and blowing the smoke into his bag during the flight.

The flight attendant informed the man smoking was not allowed on the plane, and he was spotted heading to the restroom a few moments later.

While inside the restroom, the plane's smoke alarm went off in the cockpit, causing the pilot to descend to 35,000 feet to shut it off.

Later, another passenger notified the flight attendant that the man was also seen hiding several bottles of alcohol under his jacket that he snuck on board and was drinking from them. The flight attendant also informed the man that this was not allowed on an airplane

That’s no Florida man. I’ve never heard of this bad of a case of homesickness before.

I don't understand why people who vape think they can vape where smoking isn't allowed.

To my knowledge the only things lower than being banned from Spirit are being kicked out of Golden Corral and the homeless shelter

I saw something a week or so of a guy lighting up on a flight. Props for him not trying to disable the lavatory smoke detectors and just lighting up in his seat.

just FYI if anyone was wondering why they had to do that

planes cant open up to outside air ventilation above 35k feet so they had to do this to let all the smoke out

Being banned from Spirit is not such a bad punishment really. Probably did the guy a favor.

ETA Hangover beat me to it. Point still stands.

Hate to hear he's banned from Spirit, because now his trashy arse is going to be bothering the normal people on Delta and American.

keakar, where'd you get this misinformation?
I have over 10,000 hrs of flight time in the Airbus and have never heard anything like this.

I could bore you with the "Removal of Smoke/Toxic fumes” checklist but suffice to say there is no reference to 35,000'.

edited for spelling
