A Florida man arrested for attempting to cross the Atlantic Ocean in a human-sized hamster ball has tried the stunt multiple times before.

Reza Ray Baluchi - an Iranian athlete and activist living in the US - was arrested on 1 September, 2023 after being spotted by the US Coast Guard 70 nautical miles off Tybee Island, Georgia.

Baluchi was seen in a human-sized and powered hamster wheel, apparently on his way to London.

In his latest attempt, Baluchi and police are reported as having been in a three-day standoff prior to his return to shore and arrest on 1 September. During the stand off, Baluchi allegedly threatened to harm himself with a knife if authorities attempted to arrest him. He's also reported as claiming he had a bomb onboard his ball - the claim was later found to be false.
Okay, so he’s clearly nuts.

But it’s kind of stupid that he’s not allowed to do this just because the Coast Guard said so. If he wants to go out there and die, that should be his choice.

Baluchi now faces charges of obstruction of a boarding and violation of a Captain of the Port order.

Hadn't thought about it before (never have I had a craft boarded by the CG), but how does that square with the 4th Amendment if you are in US Waters?

Seems like he would start from Morocco or some place like that to catch the prevailing winds, but more importantly, if it's against the law to do stupid things, then we have all been outlaws.

Let him go. If he makes it, he makes it. If he dies, he dies.

Don’t think you need extra context to form that conclusion. Man was in a hamster ball thinking he could get from Florida to Portugal

The first person to cross the Atlantic solo in a row boat finally made it to the shores of the US in July 1969 after a perilous six month journey. They were expecting a huge reception and a lot of press but nobody was there to celebrate or publicize the milestone. The problem was bad timing. Everybody was at home that day watching Neil Armstrong walk on the moon.

Where does one even buy an ocean-going human hamster ball? It’s a crazy idea and definitely suicidal but also like fascinating in it’s own way.
