Flags on Mailboxes

to let the postman know that there is mail in the mailbox that they need to pick up. Used to be a big thing. Walking around the neighborhood yesterday (we have nothing but brick mailboxes), and maybe 1 out of every 20 still has a red flag attached. I think they all used to, but it's a 30+ year old neighborhood. Mine no longer has a flag.
I miss the days when you actually had to raise a flag on your mailbox for fear that the postman would pass by you box without picking up your mail. Hell, today, I wish I could raise a red flag to let them know that I don't want their paper spam anywhere near my mailbox.

There was a time when people would put bills (and checks) in the mailbox and raise the flag to make sure the postman stopped.
These days, you don't want to alert thieves that there is something in there.

The other day, we got a piece of mail sent to us in February. That little flag isn’t helping with today’s USPS.

I wonder if the postmen aren't the ones breaking the flags off. LOL
Found out in La. in is actually illegal to have a brick mailbox. Box must be on a breakaway pole technically. (couldn't sue for damages when neighbor took ours out and never paid a dime, make it a point to literally point them out and call them out to this day though, all the new neighbors know them as "the deadbeats")

A ponchos flag instead of a red flag would go over well in New orleans

Bitching? No. Thanks for your participation, though.

I raise the flag once a month or so

We still raise the flag for outgoing mail

In my neighborhood, a raised mailbox flag just alerts thieves to take your shite, even if it's a few dozen handwritten thank you notes that they then throw out the window into the rain down the street

The only red flags I see these days are the women I date.

I haven’t mailed anything from my house in probably over 20 years.

If it weren't for my wife, I'd be right there with you.

My dad was a rural mail carrier and I would ride with him now and then during the summer when school was out. I can remember people would leave cash money in the mailbox with a note of who they needed to pay and dad would "make out" a hand written money order. Also they would leave money in the mailbox with a note of how many stamps they needed. He would leave X number of stamps or a "money order" and on to the next box.

I still have a flag…and still use it every time I mail something. Like most folks nowadays I don’t check my mailbox too regularly. I don’t really see how you could expect a mail carrier to sort through a bunch of mail in every mailbox to figure out what mail is outgoing and what is incoming.
Maybe this is the cause of all of the delays in mail these days….

My mom is 85 and lives in a rural area.
USPS is fantastic there for older people.
Not only do the delivery drivers pick up any stamped mail but they'll also sell stamps and even let people give them cash for boxes to ship if they leave a note in their mailboxes.
Just last year she asked me to put more red paint on that little flag so they don't miss it.

Exactly. I had an alarm sensor shipped to me and it stayed in Memphis, TN a week and a half. I put in a missing mail search and it sat for a month. I put in a claim for a lost package and it showed up the next day.
