Considering here in Louisiana online learning had no training and was a spur of the moment decision with no planning or implementation.... It was, Friday after lunch teachers are told no more in class learning, Wednesday start distance learning.
That Monday and Tuesday of the following week was essentially just giving out laptops to students or paper copies of work. So of course it was going to be horrible. Plus there was no accountability for students, everyone was passing regardless.
What I'm seeing now is that many districts that have a 1 to 1 laptop to student ratio are training teachers on what programs to use and how to use them. So all teachers and students are on the same programs along with now having penalties for students who are not doing the work or logging in.

I’ll actually push back on this argument. The online platforms that will be used are the ones in place for students who were already opting for distance learning. These platforms have a proven track record.
What’s was offered to the regular population in the spring was not effective, because teachers were asked over night to transition their classrooms to virtual learning. That was a recipe for disaster.
Personally, I had 1 student log in. He didn’t attempt any work, but just logged in to tell me hello.

Time for DeSantis to have a Reagan Moment and order the complete dismantling of the State Teachers Union. Fire them all and hire fresh like Reagan did the Air Traffic Controllers.

Any alignment with the learning platforms will definitely make it better, I’ll give y’all that.
I used to teach HS special education, and we used a virtual public schools program. It was actually ahead of its time and easy to navigate for the kids. But...the difference was that they were in the classroom. We didn’t go one day without direct teaching, hands-on projects, or group assignments.
Any of our kids who were long term suspended or in home hospital couldn’t even follow the unit guides because so much of it required additional resources or further explanation.
I think virtual works for some subjects and some kids, but we’re certainly missing out on so much by keeping everyone at home...and that’s just the academic piece. Let’s not forget the social-emotional and absence of extra-curriculars

Way more teachers sexually abuse kids every year than would die from COVID. Maybe we need to cancel school to keep our kids safe. #Innocence over lessons.

I can respect this, as I’ve said it multiple times myself. Most of that time is direct supervision. A game day can be 18 hours depending on travel. But we can be more efficient leading up.
Ironically meetings will probably be done virtually now so staff won’t have to come in on weekends

It's always been this way. Take away summers off and tenure and the ones who are there because they genuinely want to help kids would be apparent as they'd be the only ones left.

I’m a football coach. See my above post about gamedays. There for a few hours Saturday morning for laundry then Sunday morning staff meeting. It’ll be less in the future by handling meetings virtually, but in the past it’s a solid 70-80 hours a week. That’s almost every HS football coach. It is what it is. It’s reality Tiger

You know football season isn’t year round don’t you? I was just talking Fall. It’s still a lot of hours year round regardless. This isn’t news for anyone who follows football. It’s a lot of hours and we aren’t paid hourly. We knew this going in.
But I get paid a living to teach (which I enjoy) and coach football. I get state employee benefits. It’s great. Can’t complain about it
