I bought my 16 year old son a 2010 FJ Cruiser with right under 100k miles on it last March. He has been involved in 2 minor accidents. One his fault and the other was not. I make him pay his own insurance and his own gas. This is what my parents did with me and it taught me responsibility. My sister on the other hand was given a brand new red Camaro 6 months before she was even old enough to get a license and never made her pay for insurance or gas. She will turn 40 in June and still lives with my parents.
Make your kids have some skin in the game! You are not doing it to them you are doing it for them.

think everyone is getting a bit confused about this. Yeah obviously, your parents were in a situation where they were able to buy you a car, pay for your insurance, etc. They were likely not irresponsible with their money and handed you those same traits. You will likely never struggle. That is good for you, and I think it's what everyone should strive for.
Agreed there's more than one way to skin a cat.
The argument isn't that it's bad parenting to force responsibility, it is against the concept widely presented in this thread, that parents who prop their kids up are bad parents and their kids will never succeed.

My kids have gone through vehicles like underwear.
Son:
Hand me down expedition at 16; Jeep Wrangler for graduation; grandfather just handed down a GMC SIERRA p/u
Daughter 1: used Saab 90 at 16... totaled, not her fault; Jeep Liberty... totaled, at fault; grandparents gifted a Honda Civic
Daughter 2: hand me down Benz at 16.
I still insure them all.

First Vehicle for you kid?
used but reliable
i would think that looking for an old lady car would be the best route to go
my first car was a 3 year old mercury that lasted me throughout high school and undergrad

Probably a 4 year old car that has auto braking and lane assist, etc.

Anecdotal, but the people in my life who are the most garbage with their finances are the ones whose parents didn't or couldn't help them get a car, pay for college, etc. Of course that just means their parents didn't do their job teaching them,
Is it because their parents didn't teach them, or is it because the realities of life forced them into some bad financial decisions? Or possibly both?

It does, however, make someone wonder how you'd do in a real world situation where you were in financial trouble. It's a different ball game when you have a week to come up with rent money and your only option is a pay day loan because your parents are just as broke as you.
I mean, as a parent wouldn't you do everything in your power on this earth to try to prevent this possibility in the entire lifetime of your children? While also hopefully instilling that same mentality in them so they propagate the concept to your grand children etc.
Again I am not saying it's bad to need to make them financially responsible, and I do understand and have empathy for those who have to. I also am fully aware that I was extremely privileged. But that in no way means I am not functioning and my parents were bad, and I'd be wrong for trying to do the same for my kids.
I will start investment trust accts for my children the day they're born. Every one of my paychecks will send a bit to those accounts. You don't have to be rich for this. Just $20/wk for 18 yrs with compounding interest goes a long way for starting a kid out. It should have no bearing whatsoever on their ability to function.

Just buying him a Honda accord until after high-school we will get him something different, safe and great on gas mileage

And no, I'm not going to make a 16 year old pay for a vehicle. That's dumb.
No it isn’t. Do what my parents did and make me buy one and show I can take care of it and be responsible. I had to buy a 72 Chevy for 900 bucks and partially rebuild the engine myself along with most of the interior. Drove it 9 months then my dad got me a 2000 z71 with a lift kit and all the typical baw accessories. We split the payments on it.
I’m glad they did that. It made me a responsible adult and appreciate what I had

And if you had gotten into a moderate wreck you probably would have been dead or seriously injured.
At least you would have been responsible tho. That makes up for it.

I was able to do that without having to pay for my vehicle

My parents rule was they would buy vehicle, pay for insurance and give gas allowance.
If I did anything to make insurance go up (wreck, ticket, etc), then I had to take over the insurance.
If I spent all of my gas allowance, then I had to cover the rest.
I also was required to change the oil and pay for any upgrades.
I just don't like the idea of burdening a kid with too much financial stress. They have the rest of their lives for that.

It never ends with you, mouth breather.
Millions of people were in moderate wrecks and walked either unhurt or with minor injuries.
Had several back in my "stunt driving" days.
Crack that Volkswagen you drive into a transformer pole so hard you put the engine in the seat beside you. OOPS! There is no engine out front to act as a crush zone. My Bad.

My kids' safety is important enough to me that they will never drive some 30 year old beater to "teach them a lesson."
I also don't want them in some shitbox that may break down constantly to "teach them responsibility."

1997 Audi A4 with some rims and a system. Not this one but pretty similar. Got it when I was a freshman in 2000. Totaled it my senior year.
