What was (or is) your plan for your kid’s first vehicle? Did you go the route of buying a new (or newer) really nice vehicle so they look cool? Or did you buy them something reliable but less expensive with the thought being a first vehicle usually gets trashed or wrecked? Did you buy it yourself for them or make them help pay for it?

FWIW, we helped my son buy his first vehicle when he turned 16 in 2017. It was a 2003 Chevy Tahoe. It lasted about a year before he totaled it and now drives a 2009 Ford F-150.

I bought all my kids their first vehicles when they turn 16 and another one when they leave for college.

I'm sure I'll do the same as my parents by doing either hand me down or slightly used.

And no, I'm not going to make a 16 year old pay for a vehicle. That's dumb.

I don't think this is the norm

I'm certainly not going to expect my kids to total their first vehicle.

What did you buy them? Were they required to help pay for the car and/or insurance?

Not necessarily totaled. But young drivers do have a tendency for traffic accidents. You have to agree with me on that.

My kid is going to get my wife's 11 yr old Accord in 3 years or a 10+ year old car with 100k+ miles. She's probably going to wreck it anyway and it'll save on my insurance.

Sure. They have the highest rate of accidents.

But that is what insurance is for

So no part time after school job to help them learn how to budget money and pay bills? Just wait until they’re grown and send them out in the world without them ever learning how to function as an adult? Great parenting right there.

My kids don’t have time for an after school job. They barely have time to work a little part time job during the summer.

This is your default mode when you’re losing an argument. You automatically start hurling insults.
