First US City on track to run out of water

Corpus Christi residents have faced restrictions
around watering their gardens or washing their cars since August 2024, but it was expected that emergency measures might have to be introduced as early as December 2026.
Thanks to the rains we've seen this year, that prediction has now been pushed back to September 2027, but there's still very little margin for error. City authorities need to find a solution to the water scarcity problem, and quickly.
Emergency measures might include rolling 'water blackouts', where water is only available for some parts of the day, for example. However, that's not really a solution for industrial uses – these refineries and plants would have to be shut down, bringing subsequent knock-on effects on the economy and communities.

we have the technology to desalinate sea water. The Gulf of America is literally on Corpus' doorstep. It'll be OK.

Thats in the article. Plans have stalled since 2017 on that.

Maybe if they would rename the city to Sanguinis Christi they wouldn’t have this problem.

Considering they haven't had the funds to build one and it takes a decade to get them online....

There is a whole lot more to the story. Totally incompetent city administration, gave away 50% of the water supply to industries based on run-of -river pricing, no cost water causes industry to take lowest capital/highest water use designs for process water usage. Planning ought to be on 20 year basis, but with one rain storm interest fades away. A very responsible company in the water utility business walked away this week from a valid solution because local admin is so messed up.

not a data center issue in the current context. But if you look at Exxon/mobile plant cooling towers in the right light, you can see 20 % of the corpus water supply going up in a vapor cloud. Should have used fin fan coolers which waste no water instead.

Yep. Its sad for the people to be on restrictions for years while the plants are using so much.
