Are you a travel agent or something? I'm just participating in the thread and replying to the other posters comparisons. Didn't know I would upset so many of you by calling travel agent customers stupid

No, I'm simply pointing out you are wrong out of ignorance. I agree with you, I prefer to do most of those things myself.

But is a very common misconception that using a travel agent costs you money. Most of the time, it doesn't and what they do can't be found for cheaper on your own.

Also insurance agents. WTF do they do? I’ve always gone straight to the companies online website to aquire and their claims department if needed. I have never actually talked to my ‘agent’.

Prospect and market to locate the customer, educate the customer, secure the customer's business, handle the customer's paperwork, handle the underwriting concerns, hold the customer's hand throughout the process, retain the customer's business, help the customer with claims, etc.

Everybody in insurance isn't a CSR at Geico and insurance isn't always just a commodity. A good experienced insurance guy with thousands of clients makes 2/3/4X what an experienced engineer makes.

And real estate agents who know the market and who have top negotiation skills are invaluable.

And people that pay those other times are wasting money in my opinion. You keep trying to tell me I'm ignorant but have to include phrases like "most of the time" and "basically free" to do so

I guess I can understand using a travel agent for things like Disney or other resort style vacations because they are pretty generic.

But traveling is often such an individual specific thing, it just seems weird to have someone else plan your trip for you.

I work on the claims side of insurance(not for a carrier), these are very rare occurrences for agents

For the most part Agents are marketers and thats about it

I use a travel agent for work travel and I have to say that it's pretty nice, especially in terms of getting flights changed, reimbursed for things I'd normally pay a fee for, and getting really good treatment at hotels.

Not something I'd pay for, but glad to take advantage of it.

Never understood the dislike of travel agents. They are free to use, if you want one. I do not use them for most trips, but have for bigger vacations. Disney travel agents are a freaking awesome thing to use, if you are going there.

Realtors are paid too much, but they are a needed commodity. I would expect their % to come down over the next decade.

Car salesmen serve no purpose in today's market.

That’s such a millennial statement. I prefer cable to streaming for many reasons besides just pushing a button.

One of the main reasons is sports coverage and live events.

If not that, just have all prices online at dealerships and have a guy there to assist with test drives

Do you think dealerships could make enough profit to stay in business if they did this?

Yes. The profit margins on the cars themselves are small. Parts and service are where the money is made. A little more in the back room finance guy as well (warranty, security, rust proofing ).

Volume dealers do so much better than the ones that try to rape the customer. Car manufacturers offer significant kick backs for selling as many cars as possible.

The concept of "no haggle" dealerships has been tried and failed miserably. Consumers like the idea of negotiating a better deal.

I like travel agents when something goes wrong or there is a problem. Karen can haggle with the airline, hotel, etc while I have drinks or a snack and call me when it is worked out.

There is a difference between a "no haggle" and volume dealership.

That may be the most archaic thought here. This is a disposable world we live in now.

I don't fully know, but my guess was it has more to do with the price then anything. Having a no haggle price means that every price is higher then the lowest no haggle price, because of averages.

People that are experienced and smart can buy a car for less than idiots in a haggle situation. They can shop around, they can haggle down, etc. If all prices were the same, anyone good at haggling and researching would inevitably pay more.

Sorry you're a millennial?
You prove my point, I stream live events and watch sports without cable.

I used a travel agent when we planned our anniversary trip. Very helpful and I am not taking the time to do the research.

Have used the same travel agent for years to plan and book all my travel out of the country. I dont want to do the research, and travel agents get feedback from their customers about trips that is far more useful than online reviews.

If I pay someone to do something i do not want to do it is not a waste of my money. I pay to have my oil changed, my cars washed, my yard mowed, I use a travel agent for anything but simple flights in the US. If it leaves me more time to do things I am actually interested in, it was money well spent.

That’s definitely not a millennial statement. Plenty of older (and of course younger) generations don’t watch cable as much if at all either.

But I’m curious to know what your other reasons are.

On one hand, I'd say travel agents, but we used a travel agency for our honeymoon because we didn't have the time/energy to plan all that shite with the wedding planning on our plate. Gave them our budget and they put together a banger of a trip that actually came in a few hundred below our budget.
