Corporations retain travel agencies for their traveling employees. That's the only area I know of that they're surviving.

I'm on a trip currently that I probably would've rathered a travel agent do all the work. And I usually love booking my own travels.

This one though involved 9 people, 5 countries, and everyone coming and going at different times. It was a fricking nightmare to book.

Other than those instances though, i would never think about it.

I could definitely see why older people with not much travel experience would want to use them though.

I'm always amazed at how much street level/store front travel agency presence there is in Europe, though.

I will say that we've discussed trips where the logistics were too difficult for us to feel comfortable throwing tons of money at without outside help. I'm sure with the right time and effort we could avoid using help, but South America/Patagonia was one where we decided we might opt for a pre-planned trip or an agent.

So say a corporation is having an event. They bring in outside people and/or employees from all over. This is where a corporate TA is highly valuable. They coordinate, rental cars, hotels, dinners, flights, banquet rooms, etc... for numerous people. They also get discounts for purchasing at once. Sure a single person on the road making their own plans, there is no need, but when you get events and such, this is where they come into play

you could say the same about valet parking and grocery delivery.

Again time is money and people will pay for services that are convenient. Its not a hard concept

I agree. But then again, my wife just used one to plan a trip to Europe.

Yeah, it depends on what kind of travel agents we're talking about.

My wife and I use a service - which we love - when we plan our more extensive international trips. Not only do they help recommend hotels/flights/etc. in our price range, but their process also helps organize the logistics of the entire trip (additional flights, trains). Then we pay one lump sum up front. They make all the bookings. We don't have to worry about keeping that money earmarked until the trip.

Now, the folks you used to call up to book you a round-trip flight from Atlanta to Dallas...yeah, I have no idea how those are still around.

If you think car salesmen are worthless you obviously aren’t getting a good deal

We can spot you “car salesmen are worthless types” from a mile away

Anyone stupid enough to still be paying for travel agents deserves to have money taken from them

I thinks it’s people who place a value on their time and feel that paying someone with knowledge and access to do the research and booking is worth the expense.

It’s like, I can change my own oil but I’d rather pay someone to do it.

I'm fully aware of the concept of time versus money but thanks for the lesson

It doesn't mean my opinion of people using travel agents isn't valid. I feel the same way about grocery delivery, I like to shop myself just like I would prefer to do my own trip research.

Corporations and government employees. Who else is going to book their airfare and lodging? Then whatever time they have left, they are still worth it for many things like cruises, Disney, etc.
They have a large presence overseas as well.

Your comparisons are ignorant at best though. Many of these services are actually basically free. Disney travel agents, Walmart grocery pick up (I realize not delivery) cruise travel agents, etc. because the price is built in and the travel agents get a commission from the hotels, airlines, etc.

There are some ways that you may have to pay a travel agent, but generally its built in already.

Peasant.

Na I know what you mean. I've planned plenty trips myself, after a while I started to notice its like cooking... I criticize things I cook more harshly, it tastes so much better when someone else does the cooking.

Are you a travel agent or something? I'm just participating in the thread and replying to the other posters comparisons. Didn't know I would upset so many of you by calling travel agent customers stupid

I buy a lot of fresh food so I'd prefer to go through it myself instead of Reggie at Walmart selecting it for me, but I do know what you mean

I meant to explain. Its like booking Disney. There is absolutely no cost you to as the customer and there is absolutely no way to save the money by doing it yourself. If a travel agent finds a price for you for a hotel or Disney, you can't then go straight to the hotel or Disney and save.
