The dangerous misconceptions about shotgun patterning by folks who allege basic (or greater) experience with firearms are frightening.
as someone who is a very avid turkey hunting, I'm just going to bet that I've patterned more shotguns than 99% of this board

because shotguns are more generous and forgiving in aiming than pistols
Cool. You still have to aim them. "Point and shoot" is the only issue with what you said.

Glad to hear it.

I'm more accurate with a shotgun than any handgun. I suck firing a handgun.

Probably so, but even that doesn't translate to defensive situations. And I was just commenting on the misconceptions, generally, not anything you said or even inferences I drew from your posts.

yes, my apologies, I forgot how technical gun people are with terms and phrases

Hunting turkeys and defending your home are quite different.

did I claim it to be a super weapon? just that I trusted her to be able to hit something with it rather than a pistol
I didn't say you did.
I'm just saying that people see phrases like "just point and shoot" and they assume that a shotgun will send a wall of lead 10 ft wide with 1 BB per square inch from the muzzle out to 30 yards. There's a lot of bad info out there regarding shotguns. Just trying to dispel a few myths.

ugh
Did I compare the 2?
No...just strictly about the patterns of shotguns and my knowledge of them

This isn't a magazine/clip discussion.

Nice edit.

So not really the super weapon people claim it to be, right?

You should not rule out you walking in on a robbery in progress, it happened to someone close to me and she has now made sure it will never happen again. It's always better to be prepared.. My suggestion would be an 870 with buck shot or a pistol of your liking, being comfortable with the gun is one of the biggest factors imo

Hi, I'm CBLU316, nice to meet you.
It wasn't exactly a break in but the circumstances led to my mom being shot and a neighbor being stabbed to death.

Well, yeah, you kind of did. We're talking about the use of a shotgun for home defense, and you brought in that you know more about patterns of shotguns than 99% of the board. Unless you just really wanted us all to know that.

no, I kinda didn't
it was in response to Ace's comment about common misconceptions with shotgun patterning, which I assumed was meant for me, and I was just clarifying that I'm very familiar with patterning
but this doesn't really matter

An estimated 3.7 million burglaries occurred each year on average from 2003 to 2007. A household member was present in roughly 1 million burglar- ies and became victims of violent crimes in 266,560 burglaries.
Took that from the department of Justice incase you weren't being sarcastic.
