Trying to get out of the way of a 120mm FSFDDU round.
Go ahead - ask him about his laser rangefinder, computerized sight and fully stabilized 120mm smoothbore.
Go ahead and ask him
I'll just say the fire control system on an M1A1 is an amazing thing to behold in action.
It actually became more accurate the faster we were moving due to the fact the suspension handled smoother at higher speeds.
But you couldn't just hop in the gunner's seat and start blasting away. You had to properly boresight it first.

I have a blowgun with poison darts that were dipped in the serum of poison dart frogs from the Amazon. I coincidentally bought them on Amazon.
Me, too. Weird.

My back up is an atlatl, but I am not that happy with my pattern on paper? One big fricking hole with no spread.
I did some research on this - that's not a bug, that's a feature. Apparently the "one big fricking hole" is the engineered outcome.

.357 mag for me but I'm thinking about the Ruger LC9S for CCW. My wife carries the LCP(.380) with the viridian green laser as her CCW and it's a great little gun. I hear people say .380 is too weak but she'll put 6 in your chest in a couple seconds and change that thought. It's super light at 9.5 oz unloaded and she's comfortable enough with it to be perfectly reliable.

But you admit that you weren't using a weapon commonly employed for home defense, as that phrase is widely used, don't you?
I suppose you could use an Abrams for home defense. I'd like to see the guy brave enough to try and break in with an Abrams idling in the driveway.

Desert Eagle .50AE. Got one a few weeks back and it is just fun as hell to shoot. Keep it by the bedside loaded with hollow points to ensure maximum carnage

You could probably build a lightweight AR that weighs less than this behemoth.

I'm just saying that people see phrases like "just point and shoot" and they assume that a shotgun will send a wall of lead 10 ft wide with 1 BB per square inch from the muzzle out to 30 yards. There's a lot of bad info out there regarding shotguns. Just trying to dispel a few myths.
Guy on YouTube demoed the pattern of a 12 gauge sawed off to 18 inches with various types of shot at distances like 10, 20, 30 feet like what would be typical in a home encounter. The results demonstrated that at those distances a shotgun is just another rifle.

What are the best ones to have for that " just in case moment" ?
Depends how far out you want to take that "just in case" situation.
Average annual burglary rates from 2003-2007 where a household member was present:
Do you own your home? 6.7 per 1,000 households
Do you have a household income >$75,000? 5.7 per 1,000 households
Are you white? 8.5 per 1,000 households
Are you married w/o kids? 3.7 per 1,000 households
Are you married with children? 7.2 per 1,000 households
Do you lock your doors and windows, requiring forcible entry? 1.5 per 1,000 households
Do you have sketchy acquaintances? 29.5% of burglaries while a household member was present were committed by an offender known to the household member. 24.2% were strangers and 46.3% were unknown, meaning the victim couldn't determine one way or the other. Furthermore, 65.1% of burglaries where a household member experienced violence were perpetuated by an offender known to the victim.
Lastly, if you do have children, you should be incredibly prudent in your gun care and you should make sure you weigh the pros and cons of that decision. Annually, 1 child dies unintentionally from a firearm in their home or vehicle for every ~180,000 households with children and a firearm. Conversely, 1 burglary-related homicide occurs annually for every ~1,375,000 households.
None of this is mean to say you should do one thing or another, but if you're serious about protecting yourself and minimizing the risks to you and your family, you should look at all the facts.

glock 17 or 19, +p hollowpoints (mine are loaded with speer gold dot)
ar15 with a red dot, flashlight, and 55gr ball ammo.
if you have a shotgun, 00 buck will absolutely positively stop anything or anyone that can fit through your door, and some things that cant.
