Those Depression Era families were so small because of the economics.
How many of those kids were sent to live with relatives when they couldn’t afford to feed them? We had a few in our family that had to do that.
Also had a family of six living in a one room farmhouse in Leitchfield, Kentucky. In today’s day and age, those kids would probably removed from the home due to neglect.
Apples and oranges by a long shot.

We just had our first child last fall, both of us in our early 40s with careers. He will be our one and only child. I can't imagine having a child when I was in my 20s with the much lower income I had then.

People who have jobs and wait until they can afford to have kids are exactly the types that need to have more kids.
I made a comment along these lines in the valedictorian thread from a few weeks back. The top five students in my graduating class were five of the most brilliant people I've ever known, all in their mid-30s now and all well into their very cushy careers. Four of the five are married. One of those five has two kids. One of the five has one kid. The other three are childless, and have given no indication that they plan to have kids.
Three kids among those five brilliant and hard-working people (plus four spouses). Three of those bloodlines on track to just die out. It's depressing.

This is all by design. When penicillin/antibiotics came about, the elites became scared that too many of the undesirable commoners would live and reproduce so they started a long campaign of discouraging reproduction.
This thread is full of people who don’t feel bad at all about choosing personal wealth and freedom over producing offspring. That’s a new thing for humanity.

Why weren’t they on the pill?

its the cost of high living, people going to college longer, not finding a spouse, waiting to start a family until finances make sense, plus kids now days are being brain washed to believe having children is bad for the environment, etc...

Also the OT isn't gonna like this but a robust parental leave policy would go a long way towards helping society. The lowest of society is going to pop out babies regardless. Educated middle class workers delay until it's more convenient financially. Might as well help the good people produce more kids.

@unusual_whales
It costs an average of $20,813 per year to raise a single child in the US, per CNBC.
I know it varies state by state, but I am ok with one!

agreed. I didn't get shite, so I took 2 weeks off unpaid.
ETA: Colorado did already start deductions for a coming statewide paid family leave program that was voter approved. Which is great for future parents.

To be fair, I didn’t get laid until I was nearly 30.

In the same boat, except we're mid 30s. We're thinking of having 1 more but we'd need a bigger house for that and idk if that'll be financially the right move anytime soon with the current climate.
At any rate, the me in my 20s had no business having a kid for many reasons, I'm in a much better position now to raise and support a family in my 30s and I'd imagine that's the case for a lot of people. I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing for people to be smart enough to wait to have families when they're more financially stable and emotionally mature enough to give their children a proper upbringing.

Living in a 2 room shack, or what?
Kids can share bedrooms.

Say whatever you want about the Catholic Church they’ve made plenty of mistakes but they’ve been dead right about birth control for 100 years.
