The overall decline in births is explained in part by the increasing age of first-time mothers, according to Carolina Aragão, a research associate at Pew Research Center.
“Women have been delaying motherhood,” Aragão said. When people have their first child later, they tend to have fewer children overall, Levine explained.
Birth rates among women in their late 30s and early 40s rose in the last decade, and the birth rate among women over 45 also exceeded one birth per 1,000 population for the first time in more than a decade.
Meanwhile, the teen birth rate dropped to a record low in 2022. There were 13.5 births for every 1,000 teens ages 15 to 19, down from 13.9 in 2021, according to the new CDC data.
Would the correlation of the ease of obtaining abortions also play into a lot of these figures?

I’ll add one: cell phones+Snapchat make for socially awkward boys

Lol! Are people actually deciding their family size based on carbon footprint impact? They probably shouldn’t have kids then

Wife (no pics) and I are mid-30s and just had our first heading into year 9 of our marriage. We're very comfortable financially as well as mentally and I couldn't imagine having a kid at any other stage in our lives. If it were safe to have kids into our 40s, we'd probably have 4 or 5, but we'll likely be halted at 2 or 3.

It’s a chicken-egg situation on most of those things and lower birth rates.
Small and broken (a lot easier to divorce or never marry without small children in the picture) families contribute in general to feelings of isolation and lack of identity, which makes people susceptible to lots of things which make it less likely that they will want children.

Those Depression Era families were so small because of the economics.
Yeh, they were really doing it right

Compared to who?
The descendants of those poor, dirty (better off never born?) depression era kids who are marrying late, not having children, and posting selfies from a different country every few months?
I’m not judging individuals lifestyle choices, but let’s not pretend it’s some objective moral standard we are using to say we are doing it better now.

People who have jobs and wait until they can afford to have kids are exactly the types that need to have more kids.
Unfortunately, the opposite is happening. The ones who are perfectly fine depending on Mother Government and the taxpayers for everything are the ones who keep having children at a high rate. Idiocracy in place.

Yeah, none of that stuff happening these days.

Not on the same scale.
Plus, they probably wouldnt have had all those kids back then if their BC was "pull out and hope for the best"

Yeah, none of that stuff happening these days.
It’s only one demographic in America that is slowing its birth rate correct?

Well I don't think we need 10 person families to keep rhe borth rate increasing.
Younger people always try to blame how expensive it is to raise kids, but like someone mentioned. It was always expensive, but people just have no taste for reducing their luxuries.
It isn't too expensive to raise kids, it is too expensive to raise kids and not make a sacrifice. Which is fine, just realize that society goald changed.

The birth rate for the poorest demographics has largely stayed the same, while the middle class and up and lessened drastically
So are you saying the least selfish and most family altruistic people are the poorer demographics in this country? Or has there been an increase on expenses on the middle class and up more drastic than previous generations? Which one is more likely?

Likely the quality of life at the bottom doesn't degrade near as much for the decision of having multiple kids. Instead of 2 kids sharing a room it is 3. They aren't missing a yearly trip to Destin and Disney because they weren't going anyway.
Coupled with lack of heathcare options, planning options, and education.

I just think your reasoning is very flawed. Look at south la where you are pretty much forced into private school. In the last 15 years, private school at my alma mater increased by 115%. That’s insane. That’s so far over the average increase in salaries
The expenses on having a family are far outpacing the income earned by a family. That’s just facts

You could send the kids to public school. Before you scoff, realize that it is just a sacrifice you aren't willing to make. There are plenty of great public schools that beat put 95% of the privates.

And it wasn’t a sacrifice previous generations had to make, because it was far cheaper relatively speaking
Families are more expensive than ever. Just a simple economic fact

I’m surprised this was heavily upvoted. Folks around here usually lambast the idea of paying for a mother’s “vacation.”
Maybe Ivanka swayed some people.
